Last week, we had the pleasure of attending the Better Basics Love of Literacy event, where we celebrated the nonprofit's reading and mathematics achievements for the 2025-2026 school year. A special thank you to Shaina Berry and the team for the invite and hospitality!

Speakers included Autumm Jeter, Alabama State Department of Education Assistant Superintendent; Ruby Walker, Better Basics Teacher of the Year; and Henry Irby, Public Information Officer at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

Teachers and police officers (along with EMTs and firefighters) are local HEROES, and we like to honor them whenever we can. This week, we had the honor of presenting the 2026 Teacher Appreciation Luncheon for Better Basics, a Birmingham-based nonprofit that equips children with academic skills and educational opportunities for lifelong success. These teachers are on the ground at schools across Central Alabama, helping provide math and reading intervention. What a privilege it was to thank them for their work!
