According to the Mayo Clinic, a bone density test determines the risk of broken bones, identifies decreases in bone density before a break or fracture occurs, confirms a diagnosis of osteoporosis, and monitors osteoporosis treatment.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends a bone density test if you fall into any of the following categories:

• You are a woman age 65 or older
• You are a man age 70 or older
• You are a woman of menopausal age with osteoporosis risk factors
• You are a postmenopausal woman under age 65 with risk factors
• You are a man age 50-69 with risk factors
• You have broken a bone after age 50
