The federal government now spends more on interest than on the entire military.
Not more than one branch. More than the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Space Force combined. About $1.2 trillion a year on interest against roughly $950 billion on national defense.
Look at where the blue line crosses the gray one. Around 2022. And its accelerating!
This matters for you retirement. Interest payments aren't a policy choice that Congress can change. Nobody votes on them. They're the cost of debt already borrowed, and they compound whether Washington agrees or not. That spending has to come from somewhere, taxes, cuts, or more borrowing.
Most people think of retirement risk as market risk. But there's a second, bigger risk. Namely the debasing of the money your retirement is denominated in.
