Southern California has been reminded once again how active our fault lines really are.
32 years ago, the Northridge Earthquake changed California forever. On January 17, 1994, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck Northridge, causing loss of life, more than $20 billion in damage, and impacting thousands of families, homes, and businesses across Southern California.
Just days ago, on January 19, 2026, a magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Indio Hills sent shaking from the Coachella Valley to Los Angeles and San Diego. Thankfully, there were no major injuries or damage—but it was a clear reminder that earthquakes don’t give warnings.
What’s surprising is how coverage has changed.
After Northridge, about 40% of homeowners carried earthquake insurance.
Today, that number has dropped to less than 15%.
Experts agree we’re overdue for another major earthquake. The San Andreas Fault and surrounding fault lines haven’t gone anywhere, and neither has the risk. As we begin the new year, it’s a smart time to revisit protection and make sure your home or property is properly insured.
Earthquake insurance is not included in standard homeowners insurance policies. When the ground shakes, the difference between being prepared and starting over can be life-changing.
If you own property in California, let’s talk about what earthquake insurance coverage looks like today for you and your family.
