The 2026 Kentucky Bourbon Festival is getting closer. 👀

Last year, more than 7,000 guests gathered in Bardstown for one of bourbon’s biggest weekends, and over 2,000 attendees stopped by the CaskX booth to spin the world famous 8-foot-tall Tasting Wheel.

The lineup featured rare and celebrated pours, from Pappy Van Winkle 10 & 12, Old Fitzgerald 19, to Maker’s Mark Cellar Aged and other distinguished expressions. One of the weekend’s memorable surprises came from Dan Callaway of Bardstown Bourbon Company, who scored the first five guests in line a taste of Cathedral French Oak.

Fun fact: Did you know whiskey barrels can help age Tabasco® hot sauce? 🌶️🥃

According to TABASCO®, their pepper mash is aged for up to three years in white oak barrels previously used for whiskey before becoming the sauce recognized around the world.

After maturing whiskey, many barrels go on to live another life across a variety of industries, from scotch whisky and beer to maple syrup and hot sauce.

It’s a reminder that the story of a barrel rarely ends after its first fill. Long after the whiskey is gone, the wood itself continues to carry character, influence flavor, and remain part of the aging process in entirely new ways.

Tariffs on Scotch whisky have officially been lifted, reopening a key trade relationship between the United States and Scotland. 🥃

The decision also restores the long-standing exchange of American oak barrels used in Scotch maturation, reconnecting two of the world’s most established whisky regions.

By law, bourbon must be aged in new, charred oak barrels. Once emptied, many continue their journey overseas, where they play a critical role in shaping Scotch whisky, making this relationship essential to both markets.

For Kentucky bourbon producers, this development reinforces continued global demand and highlights the broader role bourbon barrels play across the international spirits industry. 🌎️
