MURANG’A COUNTY: FMD VACCINATION PREPARATIONS AMID THE OUTBREAK

As Murang’a County responds to the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak, progress in vaccination preparations offers hope to farmers and animal health professionals working to protect livestock and livelihoods.

According to the update shared by our colleagues in Murang’a, vaccines have been procured, and pre-vaccination sampling was nearing completion. The vaccination launch was scheduled for Monday, 19 October 2026. We await confirmation of the launch and further updates on the rollout.

Participation of veterinary paraprofessionals

The update indicates that county government staff have been given first priority in the exercise, with provision for the application portal to reopen so that more practitioners can apply.

Private veterinary paraprofessionals who had already submitted their applications have been advised that they will not need to reapply. Clear communication on selection, deployment and reporting arrangements will help practitioners prepare and participate effectively.

Our call as KVPA

An effective response requires coordination between county veterinary teams, private practitioners, farmers and other stakeholders. We encourage transparent engagement and the inclusion of qualified veterinary paraprofessionals to strengthen field capacity and help reach more livestock keepers.

We also urge farmers to cooperate with the veterinary teams and follow the guidance issued by the county veterinary authorities throughout the exercise.

To our colleagues in Murang’a: your commitment matters. These preparations are an important step, and we look forward to a coordinated rollout that protects animals and the families who depend on them.

Together, let us protect animal health, safeguard livelihoods and support our farmers.
