For many of us, Dad has always been the storyteller, the problem-solver, the teacher, or the one we turned to for guidance.

When dementia becomes part of his journey, the relationship may begin to change, but the love, connection, and meaning remain.

Supporting a father living with dementia can look like slowing down, listening with patience, honoring his memories, and meeting him where he is in the moment. It can also mean learning new ways to communicate, creating familiar routines, and offering reassurance when the world feels confusing.

Dementia may change how someone expresses themselves, but it does not erase who they are.

This month let’s remember to support fathers and father figures living with dementia and the families walking beside them.

Lewy body dementia is one of the most common types of dementia, but it is often misunderstood or misdiagnosed.

It can affect memory, thinking, movement, sleep, behavior, and visual perception.

For caregivers, families, and healthcare professionals, understanding Lewy body dementia is an important part of providing compassionate support.

Patience, reassurance, routine, and dementia-friendly communication can help a person living with Lewy body dementia feel safer, calmer, and more understood.

Awareness leads to better care.

A calm, respectful approach can make a big difference in helping a patient feel safe, heard, and supported.

Patients may not remember every detail of the visit, but they will remember how they felt in your care.

Small communication changes can create a more dementia-friendly healthcare experience.

Falls can be especially dangerous for older adults living with dementia. Changes in memory, judgment, balance, vision, and awareness can increase the risk of tripping or losing balance. Small changes, however, can help create a safer and more supportive environment.

Helpful fall prevention tips include keeping walkways clear, removing loose rugs or clutter, using nightlights, making sure shoes fit properly, and encouraging walkers or canes when needed. Keeping frequently used items within easy reach and offering gentle reminders to move slowly can also help.

A calm, familiar environment with clear pathways, good lighting, consistent routines, and supportive supervision can reduce confusion and promote confidence.

Fall prevention is not about limiting independence. It is about helping each person feel safe, supported, and able to move through their day with dignity.

A dementia friendly community is built in the places our neighbors already know and trust.

The coffee shop. The bank. The church. The salon. The pharmacy. The local business where patience and understanding can make someone’s day a little easier.
