National Capital Area Messengers of Peace

National Capital Area Messengers of Peace The Scouts of the National Capital Area are accepting the call to become Messengers of Peace. Please join us. We choose Sunday August 16th for a few reasons.

The genesis behind the idea is that one of the visions that Baden-Powell had for Scouting was that it would be a vehicle for world peace. With that in mind, The World Scouting Movement adopted a Messengers of Peace initiative which BSA has also embraced:

This Summer has definitely been one that has tested the bonds that hold

us together as a nation. In fact, all over the world, there is a sense of concentrating on what divides us rather than what unites us. Scouting is definitely a way where we call can get together. With that, a few of us have come together to form the National Capital Area Messengers of Peace. This is not intended to be a BSA thing in of itself, but to reach out to all Scouts from all Scouting organizations. We want to embrace all faiths and Scouts to come together for a service in one of the parks in the Washington, DC Area (we are still solidifying the venue) on Sunday afternoon, August 16th 2015. The biggest reason is we have a contingency of 46 Scouts visiting the Washington, DC area from Egypt. They will have completed 1 week of camping at Rodney Scout Reservation and plan to spend a few days in DC area before returning to Egypt. I have shared with them this opportunity and they are excited to participate. Another reason is because Sunday allows to accommodate those who may be unavailable on Saturday and being it the afternoon, I am hoping LDS members are available. So how does one learn more and participate? You can do so by following us here on Facebook and by registering for the event on EventBrite. Please click on the Call To Action button.

So incredibly proud of Jason's accomplishments, and the impact that he's had within his community and Scouting overall. We're hoping to recognize Jason's achievement at NCAC's next Court of Honor in June, when we'll recognize other Messengers of Peace awardees as well.

Scouting Americaโ€™s International Commissioner, Lou Paulson, would like to announce that Jason C Woodman (Troop 1094, National Capital Area Council) was chosen to receive the 2024 Messengers of Peace Distinguished Project Award. ๐Ÿ•Šโšœ

Jason was selected for the award for his work on constructing new and improving current ecosystems in Poolesville, Maryland. The project exemplifies the spirit of the Messengers of Peace initiative, bringing together 100 volunteers to achieve remarkable outcomes.

Eid ul-Adha begins 6/15 at sunset this evening and will be celebrated on 6/16.

Eid ul-Adha, also known as the "Festival of Sacrifice," is an important Islamic holiday that commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael), not Ishaq (Isaac) as the Bible says, as an act of obedience to God. However, God provided a ram to sacrifice instead. This festival marks the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, which is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

Eid ul-Adha is observed on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Celebrations typically include special prayers, feasts, and the ritual sacrifice of an animal such as a sheep, goat, or cow. The meat from the sacrifice is distributed among family, friends, and the needy. It is a time for charity, community gatherings, and reflection on faith and sacrifice.

In 2023 BSA's International Committee revamped the Messengers of Peace Program (MOP), in alignment with World Organization of the Scout Movement - WOSM. MOP aims to promote a culture of peace and dialogue for mutual understanding, promote service initiatives led by Scouts, support the development of young people affected by conflict situations, provide further connection to the UNโ€™s SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and connect Scouts around the world in a global network of 20 million Messengers of Peace.

WOSM has defined Three Dimensions within which we can build a culture of peace and create positive change in our world today:

โ€ข Personal โ€“ it starts with a personal commitment. When Scouts understand their role as individuals, and the impact of their ndividual actions to develop a Culture of Peace in their community; then Scouts will seek to develop skills, to acquire useful knowledge, and to become role models for others.

โ€ข Community Based โ€“ it starts in your local community. Scouts assume an active role and engage in identifying community issues, taking the first step to present ideas and solutions to improve the situation in the local environment.

โ€ข Collective Result โ€“ it happens when people collaborate. Scouts promote a global sense of friendship, international cooperation and understanding, to foster the discovery of new perspectives, exchange of ideas to address local community issues, and to invite others to work together unifying resources to pursue

We encourage all Units to actively promote MOP projects at the various levels offered by the program, both for individuals as well as collectively for the Unit. For further information see:
