Wounded US Army veterans are discovering a new mission by restoring coral reefs in the Florida Keys.

The collaboration between the Mote Marine Laboratory and Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge (CWVC) offers veterans an opportunity to uncover purpose in civilian life and work in an environment where their injuries are less impeding.

The process involves the crew diving down to clean algae off of the dead or dying coral, then attaching lab-grown coral fragments using an epoxy resin 🤿.

As oceans warm and acidify, the new corals increase the reef's resilience to climate change. With the program planting over 200,000 corals so far, both the planet and humanity are reaping the benefits!

For a week every year, a team of veterans comes down to help Michael Crosby "re-skin" coral reefs below the waves of the Florida Keys.

💡3D Printing Preserving Indigenous Culture and Wildlife

In the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, the Indigenous Nyishi community has a historical practice of wearing animal parts, such as a machete with the jaw of a clouded leopard or tiger.

But, as regional wildlife numbers declined, concerns grew around how to support this tradition with biodiversity in mind.

To combat poaching and illegal wildlife trade, Nabam Bapu—an entrepreneur from the Nyishi tribe—partnered with a tech-savvy friend to 3D print replicas of animal teeth and other desired elements.

This initiative aims to save wildlife, preserve cultural practices, and restore balance to the ecosystem. What an innovative way to integrate culture with sustainability!

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported in a 2016 study that the number of large fires doubled between 1984 and 2015 in the United States.

And these numbers are continuing to rise.

Amid the hottest July ever recorded, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the urgency of global action on emissions, climate adaptation, and climate finance.

He warned that “the era of global warming has ended [and] the era of global boiling has arrived,” stressing that there is still a chance to prevent the worst outcomes by turning burning heat into burning ambition.

He called on leaders, especially those from G20 nations responsible for 80% of global emissions, to step up climate action. He further highlighted upcoming summits in September and November as crucial opportunities to address pressing climate issues.
