Bethany High School students in Ms. McCann's 2D Drawing and Painting class have only just begun this year, but are already creating inspiring works of art that take time and talent. Focusing on value, texture, and mark-making, artists' selected an animal with fur or feathers and began meticulously scratching away a black coating on a white paper with pencil-like metal tools.

Students had to switch their thinking by removing dark spaces to reveal light instead of the traditional reverse of drawing dark spaces with graphite. This skill requires concentration to the process and detail. Marks cannot be "undone" after scratched, so students also had to problem-solve if they made errant marks.

Pictured: BHS freshman Emiliano Hernandez drew a picture of a parrot, far left, by using a technique of removing dark spaces to reveal light. Hernandez, and several other students from BHS, selected an animal with fur or feathers and meticulously scratched away a black coating on a white paper with pencil-like metal tools. Their works are displayed inside First Bethany Bank and Trust, as displayed in the picture to the right.
