📣I have officially joined Great Valley Advisors! I am so excited for this next chapter in Financial Advising for myself, my family, and my current and future clients. I'd like to thank my clients for all of their patience these past couple weeks during this move and my kids for (kind of!) understanding my work hours during the *most wonderful time of the year*!

"The current state is not the forever state." I heard this quote last week and felt it applied to so many of us invested in the stock and bond markets. But more than that, to clients who are going through a divorce, looking for a home in this interest-rate environment, and those living paycheck to paycheck and facing constant roadblocks. The "now" may seem impossible to get out of, but it is not forever.

🇺🇸Happy Veteran's Day to all the men and women who served our great country! Thank you to our special Veteran, my Dad, Jerry Rafter. He served 10 years in the Navy as an AT1 Aviation Electronics Technician, Petty Officer 1st Class. My Mom and siblings called Virginia Beach & Long Island home while he served.

Yesterday, my son Brody and niece Evelyn thanked him and other Veterans at Ridge Park Elementary for their service during a special Ceremony 🇺🇸

What am I telling my clients?
-Panic is not an investment strategy.
-If it is too painful, take a step back from looking at it.
-Take advantage of the downturn by continuing to invest.
-Short term pain for long term gain.
-This may seem "different" this time but it isn't.
-It may get worse before it gets it gets better.

We are all feeling it but believe it or not we are almost a year into a bear market. If you are a long term investor (meaning you have money in the market that you do not have to pull out in less than 5 years) you hold tight. It may get worse before it gets better but history shows us it will get better. If you are still working, keep taking advantage of the discount by throwing money into your retirement account, brokerage accounts, and 529s every paycheck. If you are nearing retirement or in retirement, consult with your Advisor to make sure you are still on track.

Last week I did something I have never done before; I asked a new client why I was different than the other Advisors they had interviewed. They said that when we started talking on our intro call I was immediately engaged and that I was giving advice and direction right from the start. Well, of course, I thought. This is why I got into this field, to give direction, ease people's minds, and take a holistic approach to financial planning at every stage. Unfortunately, some Advisors may take a different approach and instead "beat around the bush" until you agree to send statements of your assets over email and/or send a check to their office. Go with your gut when choosing an Advisor, it isn't always the one who has been in the business the longest or has the most assets, but it is the one that makes you feel most comfortable and mostly likely to put your needs before their own.

This summer I have been telling my clients to take a break from the news and constantly looking at their retirement account values and go get some fresh air. Although it may seem "different this time" we have been here before. The housing crisis was "different", the tech bubble was "different", and the pandemic was definitely "different". If you are feeling uneasy, call your Advisor or take them up on their offer to review of your accounts. We are all feeling it and in a way we are all in it together but like all of the other times, it is temporary. Take a breath and go to the beach for the day (not in uncomfortable clothes to pose for a camera though) or take your spouse to a local byob on a weeknight. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Hang on tight.

Remember, panic is not an investment strategy. This particular pull back hasn't left anyone untouched. For only the 3rd time in 100 years, bonds and stocks are simultaneously dropping and it isn't pretty. Although it may look "different" this time, our advice always remains the same: Hang on tight and stay the course.

There is sun after the storm but in the meantime, your Advisor can help ease your mind and nerves. Hang on tight and stay the course.

Retirement Planning is PERSONAL. My first questions I will ask a new client close to retirement are "What keeps you up at night?", "What is your biggest concern"?, "What made you want to meet with an Advisor"?

If you meet with an Advisor who shoves investment performance in your face and shows charts and data that you don't understand, they most likely do not care what keeps you up at night. This is a "sale" to them. They most likely don't care that you've worked all your life for this money. And they most likely don't notice you are feeling uneasy and uncomfortable during this huge change in your life. And yes, they most likely don't feel it's a lot of money.

Choose an Advisor who you like, know, and trust.
Choose one who will call you when things are bad, not just when they are good.
Choose one you feel comfortable asking the "dumb questions" to.
Choose an Advisor who puts your needs first.
Choose an Advisor who actually cares.

Are you one of those people who look at their W-2s and think "Where did all of that money go?" You are not alone.

Last month my cousin told me that I should offer a consultation and call it "Adulting 101". She, like so many parents in their 30s and 40s, wanted to get financially organized but didn't know where to start and kept pushing it to the bottom of our LONG list of things to do.

"Adulting 101" may seem juvenile, but there are many people who need to set things in motion TODAY an invest in themselves and their family's future.

If you're waiting for a sign, here it is. Book a 15 minute intro call today. https://www.raymondjamesconnect.com/aBjq_n

So far, this year has been a rollercoaster for those managing investments and those invested. Even though we have been through it before, each time seems a little different, doesn't it? But my reaction will always remain the same. I continue to call clients when things get bad and I'm sure the Advisor who didn't call during the pandemic, didn't call this time either.

Find someone who puts your needs first. Find an Advisor who never wants to see you worry.
