The Berlin police department in Connecticut operates under the direction of Chief Jeffry Cossette. The department serves the community by investigating crimes, aiding crime victims, enforcing city laws, monitoring traffic, and promoting a sense of safety.The staff includes 120 full-time sworn in police officers, ten reserve officers as well as several support staff. The department has three divisions.The Administrative division handles a lot of the paperwork for the department. The Police Operations Division manages many aspects of law enforcement that are visible to the public. This includes hostage negotiations, animal control, traffic investigations, and providing school resource officers.The Detective Division investigates serious felony crimes in Meriden. This division consists of four units. They are Crime Suppression Unit, the Evidence/ID Unit, the Special Crimes Unit, and the Major Crimes Unit. Together these units handle sex crimes, juvenile cases, homicides, robberies, narcotics and criminal investigations.
