The sudden shutdown of Bench Accounting has left many business owners without support at year-end.

Feel free to tag any bookkeepers, accountants, and tax preparers you know who are available to assist Bench customers during this transition! (Please include location).

Bench customers will need to:

1️⃣ Download everything you can from the old platform.
- Users will receive an email with further instructions.

2️⃣ Find a new accounting software where YOU own your data.
- Quickbooks Online is the accounting software I work with, but there are several to choose from.

3️⃣ Find new accounting professionals to partner with.
- Talk with other business owners in your network and ask if they can recommend anyone! A personal recommendation goes a long way in laying a foundation of trust with an accounting partner.
- Utilize the QuickBooks ProAdvisor directory.

“Good riddance.”

That was my honest first thought when I saw the email from Intuit announcing that they are phasing out tags from QuickBooks Online.

I’ll explain my reaction, but first, there are some key dates to be aware of during this process.

1️⃣ First week of February 2025 - QBO users will receive an email with a tags-to-custom-field migration tool and instructions on how to use it.

2️⃣ March 8-April 30 - Users will have read-only access to tags

3️⃣ May 1 - Tags will be removed

Personally, I am glad for this change. I’ve always found the tag feature to be redundant at best. The good news for my clients is this change doesn’t impact them at all because they are not using the feature to begin with!

You may be wondering, “What do I do instead?”

QuickBooks has sub-customer, project, and class features that you may choose from to analyze your business activity. The option you choose depends on how you need to see and use the data. You could even use a combination of the three! If you need help, just drop a comment or send me a message. I’m happy to talk through your specific situation and think through which option makes the most sense for your business.

My Loom year in review says I’m in the top 11% of recorders…which I think just means I’m long-winded 😂 Maybe “thorough” is a more positive way to look at it. Either way, I’m sure it eliminated more than just one meeting!

Sending recordings has been a great way for me to present diagnostic reviews, financial statement reviews, process documentation, and troubleshooting videos to clients and team members.

I recently described bookkeeping to someone as “fun because it’s like working a puzzle”…I don’t think she was convinced it could be fun, but oh well. The idea was enough to get me monologuing about puzzle analogies on here at the very least!

Side note: after thinking about puzzles way too much while writing this post, I concluded that I don’t actually like working physical puzzles anymore. Maybe it’s the time commitment?

Bookkeeping = 🎉, 🧩 = 🙅‍♀️

Monthly bookkeeping for clients is the 🍞 and 🧈 of what we do at Dozier Financial Services, but what does that entail?

Our monthly services include:
- Recording and categorizing transactions. Every time you spend money, make money, need a purchase order, an estimate, etc., we make sure it is handled appropriately.
- Booking journal entries
- Reconciling bank and credit card accounts
- Producing financial statements, such as a balance sheet, profit and loss statement, accounts receivable, and accounts payable.
- We also offer invoicing and bill pay as add-on services.

Personally, I love a good bank reconciliation. It’s so satisfying when all the transactions match and the difference is $0.00!

With only a few days left in the month, now is the perfect time to check in with your budget and prepare for the month ahead.

I (Lauren) have listed some of the steps I do during this phase of my budgeting cycle. Often, I lose steam on tracking every single transaction by this point, so a month-end check-in lets me catch up before it’s time to actually move any remaining funds to savings.
