California is proposing to eliminate marital status as a factor insurers can use when setting auto insurance rates.

Hawaii, Massachusetts and Michigan have already prohibited insurers from considering marital status when setting auto insurance rates.

Research has found that in states where marital status is used as a rating factor, single, divorced and widowed drivers pay roughly 9% more per year than married drivers.
