PenCoast Tax Services

PenCoast Tax Services Serving our community with reliable and personalized tax services for 19 years! Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your financial journey!

From tax preparation to planning, we’re here to simplify the process and support you through every step. Hello,

I'm Brandon Ferrell in Belmont, bringing 20 years of experience in tax preparation. My journey started in 2005 in San Carlos, focusing on a range of tax returns. The pandemic shifted my work to remote from Moss Beach, but now I'm back in Belmont. Taxation is a dynamic field. My goal is

to make it simpler for my clients, dealing with everything from rental properties to energy credits and ensuring maximum deductions and credits. Recent global changes have reshaped priorities, and I'm looking to connect with those who value expert tax advice. Let's meet in Belmont for a chat about your tax concerns. All the best,
Brandon Ferrell, CRTP

🙏 Make the most of your charitable giving

At PenCoast, we believe in giving when we have the means to do so. Giving to organizations doing good in our communities is a wonderful way to support the causes we all care about. There may be tax advantages, too. Keep on reading!

❤️ Give where you live!
Dollars given to local nonprofits immediately benefit those living in your community. There's a plethora of nonprofits doing incredible work on the coast! (And in the future, we'll be talking more about them)

❤️ Get deductions without itemizations!
If you're single and don't itemize your return, you can still donate up to $1,000 and receive a deduction. If you are filing jointly, you can donate up to $2,000. Remember: These donations must be made in cash to a 501c3 organization.

❤️ If you're giving $2,000-$5,000+ every year, consider creating a DAF -- Donor Advised Fund!
- You contribute once, then distribute grants to charities over time
- This flexibility can help create a long-term giving strategy for individuals, families, or future generations -- all while supporting causes you care deeply about.

Give us a follow to learn more about DAF and other ways to look after your taxes!

PenCoast Tax is closing our Belmont office after 3 amazing years.

In that time, we’ve helped 200+ clients with tax returns, extensions, payroll adjustments, tax planning, and everything in between.

What started as a one-person operation has grown into a four-person team.

Now, we’re bringing PenCoast Tax home to Moss Beach and continuing to serve our clients remotely.

Same people. Same care. Just a different view outside the window. 🌊

We’re grateful for every client who trusted us along the way — and we’re excited to welcome new clients in 2026.

At PenCoast Tax, we believe taxes should feel a little less overwhelming… and a lot more human.

Here’s a little advice from the tax guy…

It’s post–April 15. Some people owe. Some people are getting refunds.
Either way, this is one of the best moments of the year to understand where you actually stand financially.

Three things that are crucial:

1. Know your real numbers
Not what you think you make or spend—what actually happened.

Your tax return tells a story: income, deductions, habits. Read it.

2. Understand your cash flow
Are you living within your means?
If you owed, where did the gap come from?

If you got a refund, was it intentional—or just overpaying all year?

3. Have a plan going forward
Adjust your withholdings. Set up estimates.

Don’t repeat the same surprise next April—good or bad.

Taxes aren’t just compliance—they’re a mirror.

Use it.

There’s been some chatter going around that “Social Security is now tax-free.”
That’s not actually what happened.

What changed is this:

👉 A new deduction for seniors was created
👉 It allows older taxpayers to reduce their taxable income a bit more
👉 That can help lower the overall tax bill

But here’s the important part:

❗ Social Security is still taxable depending on your total income

How to think about it:

If you’re receiving:
• Social Security
• IRA or retirement withdrawals
• Pension income
• Investment income

The IRS still looks at the total picture to determine how much of your Social Security is taxable.

This new deduction doesn’t eliminate that calculation—it just gives you a little more room on the back end by lowering taxable income.

So the real takeaway:

This is a helpful tax break for seniors—but it’s not a “no tax on Social Security” rule.

And like everything in tax:
• Income levels matter
• Timing of withdrawals matters
• Planning matters

I’m already walking clients through how this fits into their bigger picture, especially around distributions and estimated taxes.

If you’ve heard something different or want to understand how it applies to you, reach out—happy to talk it through.

A quick note from a tax guy—not a financial planner 👇

I sit in front of hundreds of real-life situations every year. If you’re trying to get a handle on your finances, here are the basics I see actually help:

1. Start where you are.
No timelines, no comparison—just your reality today.

2. Get clear on the numbers.
Income, expenses, accounts. No judgment—just understanding.

3. Know your baseline.
What does it cost to live your life each month?

4. Mistakes happen.
Missed estimates, underwithholding, surprises… all fixable.

5. Pick one or two things to improve.
Adjust withholding, build a small cushion, clean up one area.

6. Don’t tie your worth to your money. Finances are a skill set, not a measure of who you are.

7. Keep it simple and consistent.
You don’t need a perfect plan—just steady movement.

This isn’t about selling anything.
It’s just what I’ve learned sitting across the table from people, year after year.

Clarity → small changes → progress.
