PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT

Fentanyl continues to be a danger to our community. In March alone, Whatcom County has seen increased overdoses and ten deaths related to fentanyl use. This is a dramatic increase. Often, users may have no idea what is in the drugs they use or the potency until it’s too late.

The most common forms of fentanyl are blue pills (see photo) and also white powder.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office urges people to take precautions and become knowledgeable about the dangers this drug poses. Parents should talk with their children in regards to taking illicit drugs or prescription pills that are bought on the street or given to them by others. Prescription pills should only be taken from a licensed pharmacy with a valid prescription. If you suspect someone has overdosed, immediately call 9-1-1 and advise them it is a suspected overdose. If available, administer Narcan or start life-saving efforts until medical help arrives

While our area offers many opportunities for boating and water recreation, we urge anyone going out on the water to follow these safety tips:
• Know the water. Check water conditions and temperatures and the weather forecast.
• Always, always, ALWAYS wear a life jacket. Accidents happen fast and without warning, even on a clear, sunny day. State law requires all vessels, including canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards, to have at least one properly fitted Coast Guard-approved life jacket for each person on board. All children, age 12 and younger are always required to wear a life jacket. WCSO's Marine Unit is strictly enforcing PDF violations this summer.
• Stay sober. Never use alcohol or drugs when boating or floating in a river. They impair important survival reflexes and decision-making skills. WCSO’s Marine Unit will be monitoring our waterways and ticketing those who are Boating Under the Influence.
• Avoid going out alone — friends and family are lifesavers.

We are getting another round of reports of a phone scam. It goes like this:

Someone calls you posing as an actual WCSO deputy. They claim that you have outstanding warrants, but if you buy a voucher at a specific kiosk, these warrants will go away.

These people are very aggressive but pose as though they are doing you a favor. THEY ARE NOT. No law enforcement agency will ever ask for any type of payment over the phone.

Just. Hang. Up.

And please help us get the word out.
