You’re smart and capable of doing hard things, yet you wonder: why is engaging with your money so hard?

It’s because understanding money isn’t just about the numbers—though that’s part of it. The other part is your emotions, your mindset, and the stories you’ve been told.

Understanding your money means learning what you need to know and recognizing how your feelings shape your decisions. My book, The Money Maven Manual, will help you navigate both.

This is your no-shame, no-fluff, go-to guide for mastering your money with confidence and clarity. Whether you’re paying off debt, starting to save for retirement, or navigating financial conversations with a partner, this book gives you the tools to make informed decisions that align with your life goals.

Designed specifically for women early in their financial journey, this guide simplifies topics like:

• How your money story shapes your financial decisions
• The basics of how retirement plans work
• How insurance works and what kinds of coverage you need
• How to talk to your partner about money

With easy-to-use tools, straightforward strategies, and the right questions to ask, you’ll gain the clarity and confidence to build the financial future you want.

It’s time to create a financial life you love—one built on clarity, confidence, and a plan that supports the life you want.

Three strategies to manage impulse spending:

1️⃣ Implement a waiting period for purchases over a certain amount: For example, wait 24 hours to buy anything over $100

2️⃣ Return items that you don’t end up needing or using- perhaps set a return threshold, like anything over $20 gets returned, anything under gets donated.

3️⃣ Delete apps from your phone that make it too easy to buy stuff without thinking.

*Trigger warning*

Financial abuse is unfortunately quite common, especially in situations involving domestic violence. It’s estimated that in DV situations, financial abuse is also present 90-99% of the time.

It impacts individuals across the economic spectrum, and while women are more likely to be impacted, financial abuse impacts men as well, often unreported due to stigmas around gender.

Here are just a few examples of how financial abuse can show up. To learn more or to get help, visit thehotline.org and search “financial abuse”. Be mindful of the device you’re using and whether or not your partner may have access to your search history. 👀

Common tax misconception…

In chapter 5 of my book, The Money Maven Manual, I address a common tax misconception: that when your income crosses into a new tax bracket, ALL your income is taxed at that rate.

But that’s not how it works. 🫣

After taking the standard deduction, each portion of your income is taxed at graduated rates; the first portion is taxed at 10%, the next portion at 12%, and the next portion at 22%.

It’s a bit much to wrap your head around, so I made this handy dandy graphic illustration. (You're welcome 😘)

4 things that surprised me about writing a book....

1️⃣ Writing a book was really hard. I have always enjoyed writing and been good at it- poetry, songs, blogs, social posts. But writing a book was an entirely different ballgame! It was like I ran a 5k, determined I was a good runner, and signed up for a marathon- very different!

2️⃣ It took way longer than I planned. I decided (based on nothing) that I would write it in one year. I started this book the same month that my company was acquired, (resulting in a move to a new broker-dealer), with young kids (age 2 and 4 when I started the book, 6 and 8 now). Looking back, it’s hilarious that I thought a year was remotely realistic. Probably good though, as I might not have started if I knew it would take 4 1/2 years.

3️⃣ It still doesn’t feel done. People ask “do you love how it turned out?” and the honest answer is not always; there were still changes and tweaks I wanted to keep making. But I am excited that it’s helping people, even in its imperfect state.

4️⃣ My why is what kept me going. When progress felt slow, and I was second-guessing whether I could really write (as in FINISH) a good book, I reminded myself: there are women out there with major money disconnects who NEED this book.

The Money Maven Manual didn’t happen on its own, and I’m so grateful for the people who carried me through it. 💗

Josh Burdick, thank you for the time, space, and support you gave me over the last four and a half years — this book would not exist without you. 😘

Jocelyn Lindsay Book Coach, my writing coach, thank you for walking with me through every stage, keeping me moving forward, and helping shape this into something that will make a difference.

Amanda Peterson for designing a cover that feels like me and made this feel like a real book. (also for the branding for my Money Maven Financial business)

Jen Henderson of Wild Words Formatting & Proofreading, for formatting the inside so it’s easy (and pleasant!) to read, and ensuring that it makes sense.

Dr Betty Uribe thank you for your wisdom, encouragement, and for the gift of the foreword. Grateful for how you've invested in me.

Meg Yoos Weber for being my constant cheerleader, safe place, and steady presence through every high and low.

Kerstin Joy De Neui of Kreative Heart Media for tolerating my ADHD tangents and helping me show up consistently online

LPL Financial for being an awesome company to partner with, for supporting my entrepreneurial ambitions, and for allowing me to publish this book with minimal edits.

To every friend, reader, and person who asked, “How’s the book coming along?” — thank you. This has truly been a community effort. 💕

If you’re like me, you can get so focused on pursuing your next goal that you completely miss how far you’ve come; the things you’ve learned, survived, built, or healed from. The ways you’ve shared what you had in order to help someone else, the ways you were there for others.

Whether this year has held significant milestones or it took everything you had just to make it through, I hope you’re able to take a moment to give yourself some credit and be proud of yourself before moving on to goals for the next year. 🥰
