Costs like origination fees, mortgage insurance premiums, closing costs, and/or servicing fees may apply and will be added to the loan balance. Adherence to the loan terms allows you to retain the property title until it is sold or transferred. As the property owner, you are responsible for property taxes, insurance, and maintenance expenses. If you do not pay the required amounts, the loan may become due immediately, or your property might face a tax lien, other encumbrances, or foreclosure. The loan balance increases over time as interest accumulates. You cannot deduct interest on a reverse mortgage from your income tax until you repay some or all of the loan's interest. While the loan is non-recourse, upon its maturity, the lender will have a claim on your property. You or your heirs may have to sell the property to repay the loan or use other assets to repay it if you wish to keep the property.
