I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what “Support Local” really means, especially as we head into the holidays.

Small businesses are constantly asked to donate to schools, teams, nonprofits, fundraisers and community events. We give because we care about the people around us and want to support our community whenever we can, but supporting local has to go both ways.

When an organization regularly asks a local business to donate, then gives an opportunity to sell the very thing that business makes to a large out-of-town franchise, it matters. We don't expect every order or opportunity to come to us, but we’d like the chance to be considered.

It’s disappointing to watch a company with lots of local small-business customers source holiday gifts from big corporation, or to see a group you’ve supported for years bring in an outside vendor for something you already offer. Those decisions may seem small, but to a small business, they really aren’t.

One-Eyed Cookie Lab can set up and sell cookies at schools, businesses and events. We’re even happy to make those events fundraisers and give a portion back. We also offer holiday gifting, employee and customer appreciation orders, and other ways to work together that benefit everyone.

We make our cookies from scratch with thoughtfully curated ingredients, but our investment in this community goes beyond what comes out of our ovens. Like so many of our fellow local business owners, we invested here by opening a storefront, contributing to local events, supporting schools and organizations, and promoting other small businesses. Local businesses do this constantly, often quietly, because this is our home and we want to see it thrive.

As we head into the holidays, before looking outside the community for gifts, treats, fundraisers or events, take a minute and look around you first. That small business you’ve asked to support you all year might be able to provide exactly what you need.

Supporting local shouldn’t only mean calling a small business when you need something for free. ❤️

A commercial property loss can come without warning. Whether a fire breaks out overnight, a storm damages the roof or a pipe bursts and floods the building, the hours immediately following a loss have an outsized effect on the outcome of any insurance claim. In 2014, Sonrai and Heil explored using Sonrai’s real-time fleet data tool, Vector, under a confidentiality agreement. After the deal fell through, Sonrai’s former executive vice president joined Heil. By 2016, Heil launched a competing product, Enhance, prompting Sonrai to sue over alleged trade secret misuse.

At trial, Sonrai argued the former executive downloaded and deleted proprietary data before leaving, while Heil said any conduct was limited and the information was not explicitly requested. In 2025, a jury awarded nearly $60 million, but in 2026 the court reduced the total to about $10.4 million. The case is a strong reminder that headline verdicts do not always reflect a company’s final financial exposure.
