It was an incredible evening spent fostering relationships with business leaders, partners, and community connectors across Harford County. Congratulations to Michael James, our Harford County Teacher of the Year, for winning the Maryland Teacher of the Year! Thank you for all you do to make a difference in the lives of our students and community. What an incredible achievement!

We have some amazing news to share! For the first time since 1996, an HCPS teacher has been named Maryland Teacher of the Year!

We are thrilled to announce that Michael James, English teacher and English Department Chair at North Harford High School, and the 2026 HCPS Teacher of the year, is the 2027 Maryland Teacher of the Year!

The Maryland State Department of Education announced the honor tonight at a gala reception at Martin's Valley Mansion in Cockeysville. Mr. James, was selected from among 24 school system Teachers of the Year and will now represent Maryland in the National Teacher of the Year program.

A National Board Certified Teacher with more than 30 years in education, Mr. James is a strong advocate for student voice and serves as the advisor of Voices of Equity and editor of Misentity magazine.

When asked about what this means, Mr. James of course used one of his favorite words, saying "tonight is one of the GROOVIEST nights of my career"
