Happy April Fools’! Today, more than ever, watch out for emails or messages promising “free money” or “guaranteed returns.” Scammers love a holiday laugh. Don’t let them prank your wallet!

If there’s one habit that makes the biggest difference in your credit profile, it’s paying bills on time.

Payment history is one of the most important factors lenders review. Even one late payment can have an impact. Setting up reminders or automatic payments can help keep everything on track and protect your credit over time. And from a financial planning perspective, that matters!

Fraud Prevention Tip #4: Use a Gel Pen

Avoid writing checks when possible. If you must, use a gel pen. Gel ink soaks into the paper, making it harder for anyone to erase or alter the information. Ballpoint ink, on the other hand, sits on the surface and can be removed with chemicals. Not all ink is created equal!

A well-rounded financial plan includes more than budgeting and saving. It also includes maintaining healthy credit.

Your credit history can impact the cost of borrowing and the financial options available to you. The strongest credit profiles usually come from consistent habits like:
✔ Paying every bill on time
✔ Keeping credit card balances low relative to limits
✔ Maintaining long-standing accounts when possible
✔ Monitoring credit reports for accuracy

Think of credit as part of your financial foundation. When it’s strong, it supports many of the goals you may pursue in the future.

Fraud Prevention Tip #3: Avoid Falling for “Too Good to Be True” Stories

If someone you’ve met online seems “too good to be true” and suddenly asks for money for an emergency or an investment, pause and take some time to think about this. Romance scammers thrive on creating urgency and making you feel pressured. Question their story, talk to a trusted friend or advisor, and never give in to it. Your retirement savings are too valuable to risk!

Fraud Prevention Tip #2: Shred Sensitive Documents

Before tossing old financial papers in the trash, put them in a box to bring to a community shredding event. First Community Bank and Trust hosts two shred days per year (June and September) where a licensed shedding company securely destroys documents on-site, keeping your personal information out of the wrong hands.

Bank statements, tax documents, medical papers, and anything with personal details can be valuable to identity thieves. I’ll share the event details when we get closer to June.
