To protect against check fraud, we recommend not writing checks, but if you must, always use a gel pen instead of a ballpoint.

Gel ink soaks into the paper fibers, making it harder for criminals to remove or alter. Ballpoint ink sits closer to the surface and can be easier to remove using chemicals, leaving your check vulnerable to “check washing.”

Not all ink is created equal! Choose gel when writing a check.
