Competition in the health insurance market is often considered a key factor in improving quality and controlling costs. In theory, when consumers have multiple insurers competing for their business, companies must offer better plans or more competitive pricing.

In practice, however, the level of competition in health insurance markets varies widely across the country.

Telehealth has become one of the most widely used health care tools in recent years. Many health plans now include telehealth services, and a growing number of patients are comfortable speaking with a doctor by phone or video.

For insurance agents working with individual or Medicare clients, helping people understand when telehealth makes sense can improve how clients use their coverage.

There’s an old saying that proper prior planning prevents poor performance. These words of wisdom are especially true for agents who sell Medicare-related products.

When clients arrive unprepared for an appointment, the meeting often takes longer, important details can get missed, decisions become more difficult, and a follow-up appointment may be necessary. A little preparation ahead of time can make the process smoother for everyone involved.

AI is becoming part of the infrastructure behind coverage decisions across the health system, even if most members never see it directly. Agents who understand that distinction (and can explain it clearly) are better positioned to address client concerns and set realistic expectations.

As with prior authorization itself, the focus now is on how these tools are used, where guardrails apply, and how accountability is enforced, a discussion that will continue for the foreseeable future.

That debate is still unfolding. But alongside it is a related and increasingly important question that extends well beyond Medicare Advantage: how prior authorization and coverage decisions are made in the first place, and what role artificial intelligence plays in that process.

The debate over prior authorization in Medicare Advantage is ongoing, and meaningful changes are still being discussed, both through regulation and potential legislation. While nothing has eliminated prior authorization, the direction is clear: more transparency, faster decisions, and greater accountability.

Agents who understand this issue are better positioned to answer questions, manage expectations, and help clients choose coverage that makes sense for them.

Prior authorization has long been part of the Medicare Advantage (MA) landscape, but over the past few years it has moved from a background administrative issue to a front-and-center policy debate – both inside Washington and well beyond it.

Crossing the December 15 deadline for January 1 effective dates usually signals a familiar shift in open enrollment: fewer brand-new shoppers, more follow-ups with undecided clients, and a narrowing pool of last-minute opportunities.

This year, however, the period between December 15 and January 15 carries more weight than usual. Not because agents don’t understand the deadline, but because many consumers delayed decisions while watching Washington drag its feet.

The Part D cap can definitely benefit Medicare beneficiaries, but only if they understand how it works and enroll in the right plan for them.

With the new $2,100 cap, revised tests for creditability, and changing carrier responses, clients will likely need even more guidance from their trusted advisors this AEP.

If you work with seniors, chances are you’ve heard this question from clients and from other agents. After the pandemic pushed most of us into virtual meetings, it’s natural to wonder: should we go back to in-person appointments, or stick with what’s become the new normal?

The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all. It really depends on your clients and on your work style.

If you’ve been in the business for any length of time, you’ve probably met the “young and bulletproof” crowd—those energetic, healthy 20- and 30-somethings who think health insurance is unnecessary.

That mindset is understandable, after all, they’ve got better things to spend their money on, right?
