Living along the Gulf Coast means knowing that hurricane season can bring unexpected challenges. While we can't control the weather, we can take steps to protect our families, homes, and belongings.

We've put together a Hurricane Preparedness Checklist to help you get ready before a storm threatens our area.

✅ Stock up on water, nonperishable food, medications, and emergency supplies.

✅ Keep flashlights, batteries, chargers, and important documents easily accessible.

✅ Make an emergency plan for your family, including children, pets, and loved ones who may need extra assistance.

✅ Take photos and videos of your home, vehicles, and belongings before a storm.

✅ Review your homeowners, auto, and flood insurance policies so you understand your coverage and deductibles.

🏠 IMPORTANT INSURANCE REMINDER: Most standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover damage caused by flooding. Flood insurance is generally a separate policy, and waiting periods may apply.

Preparation isn't just about having supplies. It's about having a plan, understanding your insurance protection, and knowing what to do when severe weather approaches.

Our next team member is Carly Daspit! Carly has been with Counts Insurance for 10 years and has been licensed for 8 years. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Lamar University, where she obtained her BBA in General Business and Entrepreneurship. She attended The Hartford School of Insurance in 2024 and obtained her Commercial Lines Coverage Specialist (CLCS) designation.

Carly is married to her husband, Andrew, and has two boys, Noah and Jack. Carly's favorite part about being in insurance is being able to build relationships with her clients, as well as help them save money while giving them the coverages they need! 😊

Prevention Strategy
1. Seal External Entry Points
Check High and Low: Seal weep holes in brick siding with wire mesh or copper mesh (allows airflow while blocking pests). Check soffits, attic vents, and rooflines for gaps large enough for roof rats.

Apply Caulk & Weatherstripping: Seal expansion joints in concrete patios, pipe penetrations under sinks, and gaps around door thresholds.

Use Steel Wool: Pack gaps around foundation entries and plumbing openings with stainless steel mesh or steel wool before applying expandable foam.

2. Control Moisture & Humidity
Manage Crawlspaces: Ensure crawl space v***r barriers are intact and vents are functioning. Southern humidity accelerates pest infestations under floors.

Clear Gutters & Standing Water: Clean fall leaf buildup out of gutters to eliminate breeding sites for roaches and mosquitoes.

Fix Leaks Immediately: Address dripping outdoor spigots, AC condensate drain lines, and indoor pipe leaks.

3. Maintain Yard & Perimeter
Trim Trees Back: Cut tree branches back at least 6 feet from the roofline to remove "highways" used by roof rats and squirrels.

Move Firewood & Mulch: Store firewood off the ground at least 20 feet away from the foundation. Keep thick wood mulch layers pulled back 12 inches from exterior walls.

• Choose the Right Entity: Structure your business as a Limited Liability Company (LLC) or C/S Corporation to separate personal assets from business liabilities.
• Maintain the Corporate Veil: Keep business and personal finances completely separate. Opening dedicated business bank accounts and credit cards prevents creditors from targeting personal assets.
• Protect Intellectual Property (IP): Register trademarks for brand names/logos, file copyrights for original content, and secure patents or non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) for trade secrets.
• Draft Solid Contracts: Always use written agreements for client work, vendors, independent contractors, and employee relationships to define terms and manage liability.

2. Financial & Risk Insurance
• Carry Adequate Insurance:
o General Liability: Covers third-party property damage and personal injuries.
o Professional Liability (E&O): Protects against service errors, negligence, or omissions.
