🛠️ The richest person in your town probably isn't a tech founder or someone in finance. It's more likely the dentist running four offices, or the owner of the HVAC company whose trucks are everywhere.

New research from economists Owen Zidar and Eric Zwick, based on IRS and Treasury data, found nearly 5 million U.S. households worth at least $5 million, holding combined wealth more than 13 times that of the Forbes 400.

A few patterns stood out:
➡️Most started their business themselves rather than inheriting it
➡️Most run ordinary, brick-and-mortar businesses rather than tech or finance
➡️Independence mattered more to them early on than getting rich ever did

🌭 Case in point: Dick Portillo started a hot dog stand in 1963 with just $1,100. Decades later, he sold the business he'd built for $1 billion.

Building wealth often looks much more ordinary and attainable than the headlines suggest. If growing or eventually stepping back from a business is part of your picture, that's worth talking through together.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

We take this time to honor the strength of those who have faced a diagnosis, support those currently going through it, and recognize the families and communities who stand beside them.

Awareness matters. Support matters. Presence matters.

We stand with you.

High-income business owners: Your 401(k) is maxed out. But what if you’re stopping well short of what’s possible?

Some business owners may have room to save significantly more for retirement—with a potentially much larger tax deduction. How much more? And who qualifies?

Wealth Advisor Marcus Dickerson breaks it down in “The Deduction Bazooka.” 👇

Dolly Parton’s legacy reaches far beyond music.

Over the years, she gave millions to causes ranging from disaster relief and medical research to education, children’s literacy, scholarships, and pediatric care. Her Imagination Library alone has distributed more than 330 million books to children across five countries.

After the devastating Tennessee wildfires in 2016, her My People Fund provided displaced families with $1,000 a month for six months, no strings attached. She also donated $1 million toward COVID-19 vaccine research and supported schools, communities, and causes close to home.

What tied so much of that work together was remarkably simple: see a need, trust people, and respond.

At The Dickerson Group, we believe legacy is about more than what you build for yourself. It’s also about the impact you choose to make along the way.

Generosity doesn’t have to follow one formula. It can mean supporting the people, causes, and communities that matter most to you — and doing so with intention.

Today, on 9/25, we’re celebrating a legacy of generosity.

Qualified Opportunity Zones may be worth a closer look if you're facing a significant capital gain from the sale of a business, real estate, stock, or another appreciated asset.

The basic concept:
• Reinvest eligible capital gain into a Qualified Opportunity Fund
• Potentially defer tax on the original gain
• Hold the investment for 10+ years
• Potentially eliminate federal capital gains tax on the appreciation inside the QOF

Hypothetical Example:
Invest $1 million of eligible gain into a QOF.

If that investment grows to $2.5 million over 10+ years, the $1.5 million of additional appreciation may potentially be excluded from federal capital gains tax, assuming the requirements are met.

The Opportunity Zone rules are also changing significantly beginning in 2027, making this an area worth revisiting even if you've looked at it before.

The key is timing. These strategies generally need to be evaluated around the time the gain is recognized—not months later when the tax return is being prepared.

Tax planning works best before the deadline.

If you’re facing a significant capital gain—or expect one in the near future—now is the time to determine whether a Qualified Opportunity Zone strategy belongs in the conversation.

The worst time to find out you had tax-planning options?
After the year is over.

If 2026 has been a big income year, waiting until April could mean finding out too late what you could have done differently.
