What a great Cyber Security Class today!

✅ Community + Cyber Awareness

Today, members of Superior Insurance Group had the opportunity to join the Rotary Satellite Club of Bay City at the Bay-Arenac ISD Career Center for a presentation from second-year Cyber Security students.

We’re proud members of Rotary, and we always appreciate opportunities to support and learn from the next generation of professionals. These students did a fantastic job sharing valuable insights and answering questions with confidence!

Here are a few key takeaways from today’s session:

🔐 Top Cyber Insights
• 90% of common cyber threats are phishing attempts
▫ Watch for misspellings and verify both sender + email address
• 75% of small businesses experienced at least one cyber-attack last year

📡 Secure Your Network
• Use a secure router
• Enable encryption
• Keep software updated

💾 3-2-1 Backup Strategy
• 3 copies of your data
• 2 different storage types
• 1 copy off-site

🧠 Other Helpful Tips
• Many small businesses aren’t aware of the security tools they need (like firewalls)
• Always plan for the worst—technology can fail
• Make sure computers stay updated with proper security tools
▫ A secure router is key
▫ Microsoft Defender is enough for most users
▫ Some antivirus programs can actually cause issues

🛠 If you suspect spyware or a breach
• Disconnect from Wi-Fi / network
• Reset the device if needed
• Run Microsoft scan to check for unusual activity
• Contact a local IT specialist if you don’t have an IT partner

It was inspiring to hear that most of these students plan to pursue cyber security careers after completing the program—our community is in good hands!

💜 The Bay Area Women’s Center needs us — and we’re stepping up. 💜

As a brand new member of Rotary and part of the recently launched Satellite Club of Bay City, I was asked to take on a leadership role. When I asked what that meant, the answer was simple: help organize impactful events, lead month-long service initiatives, and coordinate hands-on projects that truly make a difference in our community.

I thought to myself… I can do that. And honestly? I would love to do that.

So here I am. And this month, we are focusing our efforts on the Bay Area Women’s Center — specifically the kids and families they support, not just now, but all year long.

Today we had the opportunity to hear from their team firsthand, and it was emotional, powerful, and eye-opening. Survivors often arrive at the shelter with little to nothing. That’s why we’re rallying to help restock their most-needed items:

✔️ Comfy, casual kids’ clothing (think sweatpants, leggings, t-shirts, and sweatshirts)
✔️ New underwear & socks
✔️ Shoes for kids
✔️ Hygiene essentials

Had a blast this afternoon learning all about different types of fires and which extinguishers work best for each one! 🔥 Then we got hands-on and each had the chance to put out a fire ourselves.Fun fact: I had never used a fire extinguisher before—turns out you have to pull that pin hard to break the safety seal (like, really hard 😅).Big thanks to the Bay Area Chamber and Matt Hillman with Winninger Fire Protection for hosting such an informative and interactive experience!
