Budgeting Starts With One Simple Question...
"Where did my money go?"

Before you can build a budget, you have to understand your spending habits.

This week, take a few minutes to look through your bank statements, debit card transactions, and credit card statements from the last month.

Don't judge yourself. Just observe. Look for patterns.

- Are you paying for streaming services you forgot you had?
- How many times did you eat out or order DoorDash?
- Is that daily coffee stopping becoming a weekly habit?
- Are video games, online purchases, or in-app purchases adding up?
- Are sports betting or other entertainment expenses taking a bigger bite out of your paycheck than you realized?

Most people are surprised by what they find.

Remember, this isn't about feeling guilty. It's about becoming aware. You can't change a habit until you recognize it.

Sometimes the easiest money to save isn't by earning more. It's about stopping the little leaks you didn't even know were there.

This week, choose one spending category you can improve.

Maybe it's eating out one less time. Maybe it's canceling a subscription you never use. Maybe it's skipping a few impulse purchases.

Small changes, repeated every week, create big results over time.

Review one month of your bank or credit card statements. Highlight every purchase that wasn't a necessity.

Think by Paycheck, Not by Due Date

Many people budget around when bills are due. Instead, try budgeting around when you get paid.

Let's look at an example:

John is paid $1,500 every Friday.

His monthly bills are:

Rent: $1,500
Electric: $250
Credit Card: $35
Car Payment & Insurance: $600
Loan Payment: $200

At first glance, it might seem like John should pay his entire rent when it's due, but imagine using an entire week's paycheck on rent. That would leave very little for groceries, fuel, or unexpected expenses. Instead, John spreads his largest bill across the entire month.

Week 1
Set aside $375 toward next month's rent
Pay Credit Card ($35)
Pay Electric ($250)
Week 2
Set aside another $375 toward rent
Pay Loan ($200)
Week 3
Set aside another $375 toward rent
Pay Car Payment & Insurance ($600)
Week 4
Set aside the final $375 toward rent

When the first of the month arrives, John's rent is already covered in his bill account. He never has to scramble to come up with $1,500 all at once because he's been preparing for it a little at a time.

Instead of one stressful week each month, every paycheck carries a manageable portion of the load.

Financial planning isn't always about making more money. Sometimes it's simply about making your money work better.

✅ This Week's Challenge:

Take one of your largest monthly bills and divide it by the number of paychecks you receive each month. Start setting aside that amount with each paycheck instead of waiting until the due date arrives.
