Today's Farm Policy News Summary covers how United States sector is expected to reach a record high $605.1 billion in 2026, according to the latest USDA forecast, a 4.5% nominal increase from 2025. " sector solvency is forecast to worsen in 2026 relative to 2025" and "the financial outlook becomes more challenging when rising debt is compared with agricultural profitability.“

FSA is providing real support to farmers thanks to a strengthened farm safety net. For the 2025 crop year, the Agriculture Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage program will generate approximately $13.8 billion in gross payments. This is the largest payout by far, thanks to improvements under the Working Families Tax Cuts Act. https://www.usda.gov/farmers-first

🌾 ARC/PLC SIGN-UP IS NOW OPEN 🌾

The USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) is now accepting 2026 ARC/PLC elections and enrollment.

What are ARC & PLC?

🔹 ARC – Agriculture Risk Coverage
Provides a payment when covered crop revenue falls below a calculated benchmark revenue.

🔹 PLC – Price Loss Coverage
Provides a payment when the effective price for a covered commodity falls below its effective reference price.

Both programs are tied to a farm's eligible base acres, not simply the acres planted to a crop in the current year.

📅 Important Dates

2026 ARC/PLC:
➡️ September 16 – December 11, 2026

Producers must complete a signed enrollment contract each year. For 2026, if an election isn't submitted by December 11, the 2025 election remains in place, but the farm is ineligible for a 2026 ARC/PLC payment.

FSA is adding 30 million new base acres nationwide to strengthen the farm safety net. Now that the base allocation process is complete, FSA is announcing enrollment in the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs for the 2026 and 2027 crop years.
