The Voice of Apple Valley attended Tuesday night's special Barstow City Council meeting regarding the proposed Barstow International Gateway, a multi billion dollar BNSF Railway project that received unanimous approval from the Barstow City Council on a 5-0 vote.

According to project documentation, the facility is anticipated to create up to 20,000 jobs, including union construction jobs during development and permanent railroad and logistics-related positions once operational.

The project is also expected to reduce the number of trucks transporting cargo from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach through the Cajon Pass by shifting more freight movement to rail.

More than 40 public comments were heard during the meeting, with residents, labor representatives, business leaders and community members expressing both support and concerns about the project.

While the most direct economic impacts will be felt in Barstow, a project of this scale is expected to create indirect benefits throughout the broader High Desert region through job opportunities, increased business activity, supporting industries, and long-term regional investment.

The Voice of Apple Valley will be releasing a video report highlighting key comments, concerns and discussion points from the meeting.
