🚨 Today is April 15th — Don’t Miss the Deadline! 🚨

South Carolina filers, here’s an important reminder:

While the South Carolina Department of Revenue has granted an automatic extension to file your STATE return until October 15, 2026, this extension does NOT apply to your FEDERAL taxes.

The Internal Revenue Service still requires you to either file or request an extension by TODAY.

⚠️ Important to know:
An extension gives you more time to file, but NOT more time to pay.

⏰ Time is up, so don’t wait! Contact your tax professional today to either file your tax return or request your federal extension before the deadline passes.

Starting a business is exciting, but managing the money can feel overwhelming, especially if you aren’t a bookkeeper or an accountant. Here are 3 simple money tips every startup owner should know:

💡Separate Business & Personal Money
Open a dedicated business bank account. Mixing funds makes it nearly impossible to know if you’re actually making money.

💡Create a Simple Monthly Budget
Plan for your regular expenses like supplies, software, rent, and marketing. A basic budget helps you avoid overspending and ensures you have enough cash to operate each month.

💡Keep Your Receipts & Documentation
Save receipts for supplies, equipment, travel, and other business purchases. These records protect you during audits and help you claim every deduction you deserve.

✨ BONUS: Set aside money for taxes from Day 1 (20–30% is a safe starting point). Future You will be grateful.

Building a business isn’t just about making sales…it’s about keeping what you earn!

✨Thinking About Filing a Tax Extension?

Here’s What You Need to Know…✨

As the individual tax deadline approaches in April, some taxpayers may find themselves considering filing an extension. At Davis Financial, we want you to understand exactly what that means before making that decision.

✔️ An extension gives you more time to file your tax return, NOT more time to pay. If you owe taxes, the IRS still expects payment by the April deadline to avoid penalties and interest.

✔️ An extension moves your filing deadline to October 15. This can give you additional time to gather documents, correct information, or handle more complex tax situations.

✔️ You should estimate what you owe. Even when filing an extension, it’s important to submit an estimated payment if you expect to owe taxes.

✔️ Extensions can help you avoid late filing penalties. Filing the extension on time can protect you from certain penalties while giving you breathing room to finish your return correctly.

📌 Important Reminder: Filing an extension is not the right choice for everyone. In many cases, filing your return on time may still be the better option.

If you're unsure about your best next step, Davis Financial is here to help guide you through the process and make sure you stay compliant while avoiding unnecessary penalties.

Thinking about skipping your tax return this year? Think again.

Not filing a tax return can create bigger problems than you might expect. The IRS charges higher penalties for not filing than for not paying, and interest can continue to add up over time.

You could also be missing out on refunds or valuable tax credits that belong to you. If you don’t file, you can’t claim them, and after three years, you forfeit your refund.

Even if you can’t afford to pay right now, always file your return. There are payment options available, but ignoring it can lead to notices, collections, and unnecessary stress. Not sure of your next steps? We can. Help!

“Is it okay to keep showing a loss while I’m growing my business?”

It depends.

Early on, losses can happen because you’re investing in marketing, equipment, or building your team. That can be strategic.

But consistent losses with no clear path to profitability? That’s a red flag.

Here’s what many people don’t realize:
If your business keeps showing losses, it can hurt your ability to secure funding. Banks and lenders want to see that your business can generate profit, not just revenue.

Growth should lead to profit, not permanent struggle.

Know your numbers. Build with intention. Need help with understanding your numbers? Give us a call. We can help!

Q1 sets the tone for the entire year, so small businesses should use this time to get organized and intentional. Here are a few key activities to prioritize:

✔️ Review year-end financials and close out your books
✔️ File tax documents (1099s, W-2s) and confirm compliance
✔️ Set revenue goals and update your budget
✔️ Plan cash flow for the months ahead
✔️ Refresh your marketing strategy and promotions
✔️ Review licenses, insurance, and business registrations

A strong first quarter builds the foundation for a profitable and productive year. Start focused, stay consistent, and execute with purpose.

💬 I hear this ALL the time…

“I need a CPA.”

But when I ask a few questions, what they really need is a bookkeeper… or a tax professional… or an accountant.

Every financial professional serves a different purpose, and understanding the difference can save you time, money, and frustration.

Here’s a simple breakdown:

🔹 Bookkeeper
Your bookkeeper handles the day-to-day tracking.
✔️ Records income & expenses
✔️ Reconciles bank accounts
✔️ Keeps your books clean and organized

If your numbers aren’t updated monthly, you probably need a bookkeeper first.

🔹 Accountant
An accountant analyzes the numbers and helps you understand what they mean.
✔️ Prepares financial statements
✔️ Reviews performance
✔️ Helps with strategy and compliance

Not all accountants are licensed, and not all are CPAs.

🔹 CPA (Certified Public Accountant)
A Certified Public Accountant is licensed by the state and has passed a rigorous exam.
✔️ Can perform audits
✔️ Can represent you before the IRS
✔️ Provides advanced tax planning and advisory services

You typically need a CPA for audits, complex financial reporting, or higher-level advisory needs.

🔹 Enrolled Agent (EA)
An Enrolled Agent is federally licensed by the IRS and specializes in taxation.
✔️ Can represent you before the IRS
✔️ Focuses specifically on tax matters

✨ Here’s the bottom line:
Don’t just ask for a title, ask for the service you actually need.

If your books are behind, start with bookkeeping.
If you need tax resolution, look for an EA or CPA.
If you need financial insight and structure, an accountant may be the right fit.

Clarity saves money. Education builds strong businesses.
