🥶 Maine winters can be tough on the wallet, especially with the cost of heating fuel!

If you’re using alternative heat sources like wood stoves or space heaters, make sure they’re used safely, keep anything flammable well away, and never use outdoor heaters or generators indoors. To save on traditional heating costs, seal drafts around windows and doors, lower your thermostat a few degrees, and keep up with regular furnace maintenance. Getting into your favorite fall scents yet? 🍎🍮🎃 While you’re lighting those cozy candles, remember that October is National Fire Prevention Month! Here are a few simple candle safety tips from our friends at The Hanover Insurance Group to help keep your home safe this fall!

🕯️ Never leave a burning candle unattended. Blow it out when you leave the room or go to bed.
🐾 Keep candles out of reach of kids and pets.
🏡 Keep candles away from curtains, decorations, and anything else that could catch fire.
🔥 Use sturdy candle holders on a heat-resistant, level surface.
✂️ Keep wicks trimmed to ¼ inch or less.

🥶 As energy costs keep climbing and the chilly air rolls in, keeping your home cozy without draining your wallet becomes top of mind. Luckily, a few smart tweaks can make a big difference! ✅ Here are some easy ways to stay warm and save this winter:

• Flip your ceiling fan switch – set blades to spin clockwise to push warm air down (unless you’ve got heated floors—then leave it off).
• Give your vents room to breathe – move furniture away and make sure they’re open.
• Let the sun do the work – open curtains on bright days for free warmth, then close them at dusk to lock it in.
• Shut the door on empty rooms – but keep a little heat going so your pipes don’t freeze.
• Turn down the heat when you’re gone – dropping the thermostat 7–10° for 8+ hours can save big, but never below 60°F.
• Stop sneaky drafts – add weather stripping and door sweeps.
• Check your insulation – rim joists, attics, and basements are common culprits.
• Don’t skip the tune-up – a yearly check on your furnace or heat pump keeps everything running efficiently.
