Shining in Times Square
On September 12, 2026, the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) showcased more than 500 smiling faces on two giant digital screens in Times Square to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness. Among those featured was Josh Ritchey, son of our participant, Mary Ellen Ritchey!

To celebrate Josh’s special moment, the Ritchey family and friends gathered for a breakfast and watch party at the Navajo Event Center in Fenton, Missouri, sharing in the excitement of seeing Josh on the iconic Times Square screens. The presentation kicked off the 31st annual NYC Buddy Walk, promoting awareness, acceptance, and inclusion for people with Down Syndrome. We are proud to celebrate Josh, Mary Ellen, and their family! We want to extend a huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out and helped make our Second Annual Health Fair a success! 💙 We loved having the opportunity to connect with our participants and provide resources, information, swag, and goodies!

Were you unable to attend? We haven’t forgotten about you!

We understand that many of our participants work in retail stores and couldn’t make it to the health fair because of their work schedules. We want everyone to have an opportunity to participate, even if they couldn’t join us in person!

We have some leftover swag and goodies available, and you’re more than welcome to stop by the office to pick some up! If Ericka is scheduled to visit your store, please let us know if you’d like her to bring some along to share with our participants.

We are also taking the comments and feedback we’ve received into consideration and will do what we’re able to accommodate our participants’ needs and suggestions for future events. We understand that not everyone has the same schedule or the ability to attend in person, especially those working in our retail stores, and we want to do our best to make these events accessible to as many participants as possible. ❤️

Thank you again to everyone who attended, participated, and helped make this event possible. We look forward to making next year’s health fair even better!

Depression can affect anyone, and sometimes the hardest battles are the ones we cannot see. Remember that it’s okay to ask for help, to take things one day at a time, and to remind others that they don’t have to face their struggles alone.

Through the Welfare Fund’s Member Assistance Program (MAP), members have access to mental health benefits and resources to help them find support.
