🏔️ DID YOU KNOW? | Southern California Trails
Southern California has some of the most diverse and challenging trail-building environments in the country!
From the steep San Gabriel Mountains to the coastal hills of Santa Monica and the dry landscapes of the Mojave Desert, every trail presents a different set of challenges.
🪨 Geology matters! Decomposed granite, sandstone, shale, and other local materials behave differently under foot traffic, water, and erosion. Understanding the ground is essential to building durable trails.
🌧️ Rain can reshape a trail quickly. Southern California's long dry periods are often interrupted by intense winter storms. Proper drainage, rolling grade dips, and rock armoring help protect trails from concentrated runoff.
🔥 Wildfires change trail conditions. Loss of vegetation and changes to soil properties can increase runoff, erosion, and slope instability, making post-fire trail assessments and restoration especially important.
🥾 One trail, many users. Depending on its designation, a trail may serve hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, or multiple user groups. Each requires careful consideration of trail width, grade, sightlines, and safety.
🌿 Good trail design works with nature, not against it.
At Bellfree Contractors, understanding terrain, drainage, and the surrounding environment is a fundamental part of building and maintaining sustainable trails across Southern California.
