Most advisors take their fee out of your portfolio. We think there are benefits to paying from your bank account instead.
Financial advice is a household expense, just like insurance or tax preparation.
You'd normally pay for those from your cash flow, so it's fair to ask why financial advice is paid from the money you're trying to grow.
A percentage fee taken from your investment account is easy to stop noticing. It's harder to weigh what you don't see. Many firms prefer deducting fees from client accounts because it removes friction in the advisory relationship and clients tend to stay clients.
Plus, every dollar pulled out of your investment accounts is one that stops compounding.
We'd rather our fee come out of your checking account, so you can ask about it the way you would any other expense: am I still getting my money's worth?
Some clients prefer to have the fee deducted from their investment accounts, and there can be tax advantages to doing it that way, so we're glad to set it up if that's your choice.
We just want you to be aware of the tradeoffs in how fees are charged.
