Turning 65 in December 2026? Your Medicare Enrollment Window Is Open!

🎉 If you're turning 65 in December 2026, your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) has officially begun.

Your IEP is a 7-month window that starts 3 months before your birthday month, includes your birthday month, and extends 3 months after.

For December birthdays, your enrollment window runs:
📅 September 1, 2026 – March 31, 2027

If you're planning to retire, enroll in Medicare, or simply want to understand your options, now is the time to start planning.
Waiting too long could result in:
⚠️ Late enrollment penalties
⚠️ Delays in coverage
⚠️ Unnecessary stress and confusion

There are three ways to enroll in Medicare:
âś… Online through the Social Security Administration at SSA.gov
âś… By calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213
âś… By visiting your local Social Security office
Not sure whether you need Parts A and B? Still working and covered by an employer plan? Already receiving Social Security Benefits? There are different processes you'll need to follow depending on your situation.

Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period begins October 15!

From October 15 through December 7, Medicare beneficiaries can review their coverage and make changes for 2027.

Even if you are satisfied with your current plan, don’t assume everything will remain the same. Premiums, copays, provider networks, drug coverage, and extra benefits can change each year.

A quick annual review can help ensure your plan still fits your medical, prescription, and financial needs.

Have you been wondering if Medicare will help pay for popular weight loss medications like Wegovy® or Zepbound®?

Beginning July 1, 2026, Medicare will launch a temporary demonstration program that may provide coverage for certain GLP-1 weight loss medications for eligible beneficiaries.

âś… You may qualify if:
• You have a BMI of 35 or higher, OR
• You have a BMI of 27 or higher with certain qualifying health conditions
• You are enrolled in a Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan
• Prior authorization requirements are met

đź’˛ Eligible beneficiaries will pay a $50 copay for these medications.

⚠️ Important:
• This copay does NOT count toward your Part D deductible or annual out-of-pocket drug spending limit.
• Ozempic® and Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) are NOT included in the Bridge Program.

đź“… The program is scheduled to run through December 31, 2026, with additional changes expected in 2027.

If you're currently taking a GLP-1 medication—or wondering whether you might qualify—now is a great time to review your Medicare coverage and prescription drug options.

TURNING 65 THIS YEAR? WHAT'S NEXT?

One of the most common questions I hear is:

"I'm turning 65...what do I need to do about Medicare?"

The answer depends on your situation.

Some people are automatically enrolled because they're already receiving Social Security benefits. Others need to actively enroll during their Initial Enrollment Period. And many people who are still working past age 65 may be able to delay certain parts of Medicare altogether.

That's why Medicare planning is never a "one-size-fits-all" process.

In the graphic below, I've outlined three common scenarios:

âś… Already receiving Social Security before age 65
âś… Retiring and enrolling at age 65
âś… Continuing to work past age 65

Understanding which category you fall into can help you avoid late enrollment penalties, coverage gaps, and costly mistakes.

📌 If you're turning 65 this year—or know someone who is—take a look at the chart below and feel free to reach out with any questions.

At MR Insurance Solutions, my goal is to help you understand your Medicare rights and options so you can make confident decisions that fit your individual needs.

🩺 Medicare Planning Starts with THESE 4 Questions

While family and friends can have the best intentions on providing advice on picking a Medicare plan, this process must be unique to the individual to ensure that it works properly.
It’s about finding what works best for YOU.

Before you enroll, ask yourself these 4 key questions:

âś… 1. What county do you live in?
Believe it or not, your location matters—a lot. Medicare Advantage plans and prescription drug plans are both based on the county that you live in

👨‍⚕️ 2. Which doctors do you need to see regularly?
Not every plan includes every doctor. Making sure your preferred doctors are in-network can save you money—and frustration.

đź’Š 3. What prescription drugs do you need covered?
Each plan has its own drug list (formulary). If your medications aren’t covered properly, your out-of-pocket costs could be much higher than expected and you won't be protected from max out of pocket limits.

đź’° 4. What can you comfortably afford?
It’s not just about the monthly premium. You also want to consider copays, deductibles, and maximum out-of-pocket costs. These costs matter when you are selecting your plan.

While there are MANY factors to consider with Medicare, these 4 questions lay the foundation for making a confident decision.
There is no “one-size-fits-all” plan—only the plan that fits your needs, your doctors, your prescriptions, and your budget.
📞 If you’re feeling overwhelmed or just want a second opinion, I’m here to help guide you every step of the way.
