Today, we celebrate the birthday of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a Maine legend whose leadership is closely connected to the beginning of Kennebec Savings Bank.

Best known as a Civil War hero, Medal of Honor recipient, educator, and four-term Governor of Maine, Chamberlain was also a strong advocate for the important role savings banks could play in the lives of everyday Mainers.

In his 1870 address to the Maine Legislature, Chamberlain spoke about savings banks as places where people could protect their hard-earned savings, build financial security, and contribute to the prosperity of their communities and the state.

Just a few months later, Governor Chamberlain signed the legislative act authorizing the creation of Kennebec Savings Bank.

More than 156 years later, we’re proud to carry forward a mission rooted in helping the people and communities of Maine build stronger financial futures.

Happy Birthday, Joshua L. Chamberlain, and thank you for being part of the very beginning of OUR story.

What do stablecoins have to do with local lending in Maine?

As Congress considers new digital asset legislation, an important conversation is taking place about how emerging technologies could affect access to credit for Maine families, businesses, and communities.

Community banks play a unique role in our economy by taking local deposits and putting them to work through mortgages, small business loans, and financing that supports economic growth throughout the state.

In a recent Bangor Daily News op-ed, Kennebec Savings Bank President and CEO Andrew Silsby shares a community banking perspective on why stablecoin legislation currently being debated in Congress matters to Maine and why striking the right balance between innovation and consumer protection is important.

We encourage anyone interested in the future of banking, financial innovation, and Maine's economy to read the article and learn more about the issue.

For generations, the Windsor Fair has brought people together to celebrate Maine agriculture, community, and the hard work behind both.

The proposed Windsor Fair Agricultural Education Center represents an opportunity to build on that tradition by creating a year-round space where students, families, and farmers can learn, connect, and explore the many opportunities agriculture provides.

Kennebec Savings Bank is proud to support this project and its vision for inspiring the next generation while strengthening the future of agriculture in Maine.

Big purchases can be exciting, but a little planning beforehand can make all the difference. Whether you're saving for a new vehicle, home improvement project, major appliance, or another significant expense, taking the time to prepare can help you make a confident financial decision without adding unnecessary stress.

Planning starts with understanding what you can comfortably afford. Creating a budget, setting a savings timeline, and considering the full cost of ownership can help you avoid surprises and stay on track with your other financial goals. It's also important to do your research, compare options, and give yourself time to make a thoughtful decision rather than an impulse purchase.

Saving ahead of time can reduce how much you need to borrow and potentially lower the amount of interest you pay over time. By preparing now, you'll have more flexibility and peace of mind when it's time to make your purchase.

At Kennebec Savings Bank, we're here to help you plan smarter and spend wisely. To learn more about preparing for life's big purchases, click here: https://www.kennebecsavings.bank/how-to-prepare-for-a-big-purchase
