25 years ago today, on Tuesday, September 11th, 2001, terrorists staged an attack on American soil, the likes of which this land had never seen. It would forever change this land and lift the facade of security that the people of the United States of America labored under.
Today, at Atwood Fire Station 71, in the presence of a steel girder from the World Trade Center, Placer county paid respects to the heroes and terrible loss of life on flight 93, the Pentagon, and at the Twin Towers.
2,977 died that day, 441 of which were emergency responders who rushed into immeasurable danger to the aid of others and would never see their loved ones again. Over 3,000 people have died since from illnesses related to the toxic pollution resulting from the destruction of the Twin Towers. This is not just history. It is a lived trauma for many to this day. We must never forget.
Thank you to Placer County Supervisor Cindy Gustafson and her staff for helping organize this memorial and thank you also to Fire Chief Jim Hudson, Placer County Sheriff acting Captain David Smith, and Placer County Assistant CEO Sean Rabé, for lending their voices to our remembrance and thank you to the countless men and women who serve as emergency responders and put their lives on the line every day on our behalf. #911
