It has been a whole pandemic-while since I worked as a visual recorder live at an event and I got the opportunity last week at the InsurTech Connect 2022 conference in Las Vegas.

This is a HUGE conference of insurance professional, Insurtech start-ups and venture capital investors meant to highlight all of the innovative and unique technology and insurance products available to this industry.

I had the pleasure of working with Connecticut Insurance & Financial Services who commissioned me to build a 10x20 mural (one of the biggest visuals I have made) that captured the conference participants thoughts on Hartford as still being the "Insurance Capital of the World" and a welcoming community for InsurTech companies and start-ups because of its concentration of insurance carriers and advantageous regulatory and government support.

It was a very daunting endeavor! How to organize and visualize interviews that were happening in real-time and filling the space with impactful visuals within the 2 day conference?

As always, I trust the process - I listen intently to the interviews and find those nuggets of observation - usually spoken in metaphors (have you noticed that humans typically talk in metaphors??) - and take quick notes on stickies that create the backlog of ideas to then translate onto the board.

I then think about a meaningful visual icon that could convey a powerful meaning - one that is universally understood and transcends time - the hope that this mural is reused over and over again!

Notice the Hartford exit street sign, the talent magnet, the heart (from a direct quote - Hartford is the "heart-throb" of insurance!).

I had such a great time with this project and was so happy to be at a live conference again!

Brand new client working on the first project with her-after about a 2 hour interview on her company’s story and what services she wanted to communicate visually to her clients, I drafted a very rough rough sketch of what I heard and her reaction was: “I cannot believe how well you listened and that you created THIS on the first try! I definitely hired the right person!”

Isn’t that what it is all about? I have been smiling wide ever since!
