As we wrapped up our latest client conference call, we take a moment to share a key point from the call. The Hansberger Group does not dwell upon the daily headlines seen in the majority of financial news outlets, which report on ways to "play" recent market trends. We believe this is speculation, not investing. It has nothing to do with the management of money.

While we are constantly monitoring the economic and political environments, it does not change the fact that to The Hansberger Group it always comes down to the ownership of great businesses; to having tremendous conviction in companies that grow regardless of the operating environment or volatility, and having conviction in the businesses we own as if we could never sell the shares.

The Hansberger Group recently held its full-day Investment Committee meeting reviewing the first half of 2021 and looking ahead to the rest of the year and into 2022. Below are two important takeaways:

• In periods of abundant growth, dominant market-leading businesses – "monopolies" – typically don't stand out from the competition. However, when growth is scarce, these businesses attract immense investor attention as they navigate difficult environments, gain market share, and exert their pricing power.

• With so many headlines grabbing investors' attention at any given time, focus on what is sustainable. Sustainable dynamics – signals, not noise – will often show up in corporate earnings and ultimately in stock prices.

The latter, while often charted and cited in financial media, is really more about popularity, while the former is where our focus lies. We want to know: how is the business itself performing? Every year for decades, I spend a lot of time at the end of the year to review the previous year. I believe 2020 was, and it carries over to 2021, a year in which there was a significant closing of the mind in some ways, and that cannot happen to investors.

At times to me, 2020 seemed insurmountable, but there’s nothing impossible with conviction, process, prayer, and attention to the art, the science, and these principles that we talk so much about.

Once again, investors are confused as to why markets are so strong in the midst of so many negative headlines. Such times are a classic example of the disconnect between macroeconomics and current events versus the stock market. The stock market and economy are cousins, but they’re not twins. All that has ever mattered in investing are principles that never change: the stock market is a voting machine, not a weighing machine. Volatility is not the same as risk. Market events are different from economic events. In the end, what matters is the future direction of corporate profits and monetary policy; everything else creates volatility but is largely just noise.
