MEN AS VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE RISING ACROSS THE GLOBE:
I am taking an opportunity to shed light on issues faced by men in the shadows of society. One of these issues is Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) against men; most commonly known as domestic violence (DV). The popular image of IPV/DV is based on the familiar GENDER STEREOTYPE of a male villain and a female victim. But that stereotype paints an incomplete picture, with new research indicating a high number of male victims of domestic abuse.
A recent UK government survey indicated that 9% of males had experienced some form of partner abuse, which amounts to around 1.4 million men. This includes stalking, physical violence and sexual assault.
Indeed, a similar research in USA found that male victims of domestic violence are often slapped, kicked, punched, grabbed or choked by their partners. Interestingly, a growing body of international research indicates that men and women experience domestic violence in similar proportions. For example, a recent survey from Canada’s national statistical agency concluded that “equal proportions of men and women reported being victims of spousal violence during the preceding 5 years (4% respectively).”
The aforementioned surveys indicate that small proportions of men (less than 20% of victims) will tell the police or a health professional about their victimization. This may be due to well-grounded fears that they will be scorned, ridiculed, or disbelieved by these authorities.
As per recent research paper by Dr. Elizabeth Bates from the University of Cumbrian UK found that the overarching experience of male domestic violence victims was that "no one would ever believe me." One victim noted "I told friends, they laughed”.
Incredulously, laughter is a common response to male victims of DV/IPV. This is illustrated in the short “social experiment" video examining public reactions to a male being abused by female on the street. This video has over 8 million views on YouTube and is a powerful educational too.

Likewise, Dr. Nicola Graham-Kevan from the University of Central Lancashire UK reported her latest research indicating that male domestic violence victims are often pathologized, and sometimes regarded with suspicion by the very agencies that should be helping them.
Moreover, media is starting to take this issue seriously. For example, the BBC produced a poignant entitled "abused by my girlfriend." A short-version has received over 5 million views on YouTube. This documentary reports the painful story of 22-year-old Alex Skeel, who was repeatedly knifed, scolded, and hammered by his then-girlfriend. The police supported Alex throughout his ordeal, and his ex-girlfriend recently received a 7-year prison sentence

Another important topic to address about how men are victims of domestic violence in INDIA, is the misuse and the abuse of infamous and notorious 498A Law.
As per INDIA’S HINDU MARRIAGE ACT this law was made to protect the Wife against any cruelty subject to her by the Husband or his family. Most of such cases occurred in rural India keeping in mind 40-50% of India is below poverty line. Enacted in 1983, this law makes it criminal for a husband and his relatives to subject a married woman to cruelty which could likely drive the wife to commit su***de or cause grave physical or mental injury to herself due to harassment.. However, since its inception, the law is being MISUSED scrupulously and hundreds of thousands of men (husbands) and their families have been FALSELY implicated.
As a result, in so called “modern, democratic India”, some wives under guidance of her parents/relatives connive with some greedy lawyers, corrupt local police, judiciary and mostly corrupt politicians to use 498a law as tool for extortion to make unlawful demands of undue maintenance expenses from husband or his family or else the wife gets all sent to jail - including father, mother, brothers, sisters, cousins, uncles, aunts, distant relatives without any trial. The sad truth is - Most (if not all) Judges are watching this like puppets and are powerless to stop this circus!!
The problems with the law were the result of a “perfect storm” that was entirely unanticipated when the law was introduced in 1983 to protect the wife under HINDU MARRIAGE ACT.
The elements of the storm included:
- Extremely vague statutory language.
- A separate law that prohibited the provision or acceptance of a dowry.
- A custom that has been difficult to eradicate of a bride giving a dowry upon marriage.
- A law that may only used by women against men.
- A provision that extends criminality to any of the husband's allegedly-participating relatives.
- A police force that is notoriously corrupt.
- A law that in the past allowed for the immediate arrest of the husband and members of his family by the police on the basis of a woman's complaint.
- A provision that the offense was non-bailable.
- A domestic relations procedure that is extremely cumbersome and in many ways unworkable.
The result has been that when a marriage breaks up the woman is often able to get her husband and many of his family members arrested by simply filing a claim of cruelty and persuading the local mostly corrupt police to arrest the “so-called” wrongdoers. This is much more effective than initiating an ordinary case for divorce to extort large sums of monies.
All this may reflect a turning of the tide, at least with regards to growing public awareness and increased media interest in domestic violence against men.
Domestic violence against men is no LAUGHING matter. It is a deadly serious issue in need of concerted action. Let’s hope the tide begins to turn.
