Major medical can be an overwhelming idea at first--is it complicated? Can I pick my vet? It must be so expensive!
Major medical helps with vet bills for accidents, injuries, sickness, and disease. It's not for "routine" expenses such as teeth floating, vaccinations, hock/stifle injections, etc.
We have many options available through a few different companies, but I won't overwhelm you with all of them! I'll only present the handful of best values upon request.
Major medical endorsements start at just $200/year per horse with a $300 deductible, for a $5k/limit year! Limits up to $15,000 are available.
Use any licensed vet you choose. You pay your vet as usual, then provide your insurance company with the documentation, and you'll be reimbursed.
Pre-existing conditions are excluded, and if a claim is made, that becomes a pre-existing condition at renewal. I don't want any surprises for you--this is a downfall! But, you have that entire limit available for that injury or sickness for that year. (If an injury or sickness is sustained late in your policy year, you do have a period of time after that injury to use your benefits, regardless of your policy end date)
Major medical is great because you can budget for it, versus a major injury or colic. Avoid massive surprise vet bills!
If colic expenses are what worry you the most--we also have endorsements available to increase the colic surgery endorsement amount to $7500 (additional $80/year) or $10k ($100/year). There's a "colic treatment" endorsement available for $150, with a $400 deductible, for a $10,000 limit (on top of the standard $5k colic surgery endorsement already included with your mortality!)
(All subject to underwriter review and approval--intended for general information only)
I can help break it down for you! If we go through it all and you decide it's not for you, it's okay! I'm not going to be a pushy salesperson; I have better things to do 🙂
Cute video just for kicks!
