One of our clients sent me a text after we got his team set up on a benefits package.

He'd been saying 'we'll get there' to his employees for about two years.

After enrollment, his top employee told him: 'This is the reason I'm not going anywhere.'

That's not about the insurance. That's about what the insurance signals. It tells your team that you're building something real. That they're not just filling a seat.

What you're really building when you offer benefits is the difference between a job and a career.

Jobs, people come and go. A career? You're getting people five, ten, fifteen years.

There's a reason HMO plans have a bad reputation.

The traditional HMO makes you pick a primary care doctor. That doctor has to approve every specialist visit, every referral, everything. It's designed to slow you down.

But here's what most Houston business owners don't know: that's not the only HMO-priced option in the market anymore.

Open access plans work like this: your employees see any doctor, any specialist, no referral, no gatekeeper. It has the feel of a PPO. The pricing runs more like an HMO.

If you've been told you can't afford PPO, or if you're currently on a traditional HMO and your employees aren't happy about it, it's worth getting a second look at what's actually available.

Happy to pull real quotes and show you the comparison. No obligation.

For the HR managers in the room:

Here are five signs your current broker isn't actually doing their job.

1. They only call you at renewal time.
2. You Google benefits questions instead of calling them.
3. Employee billing complaints land in your inbox, not theirs.
4. You're building open enrollment mostly on your own.
5. You can't reach them when something's urgent.

None of this is normal. It's just what happens when you've never had a broker who actually works year-round.

Wrote up the full breakdown -- what each of these looks like in practice and what the standard actually should be.

Check it out now. Link in the comments.

Houston business owners -- what was the moment that made you finally pull the trigger on offering health insurance?

For most people we talk to, it's one of these:

A great candidate turned down the offer and mentioned benefits.
A long-term employee finally asked directly.
They hit a milestone -- 10 employees, a revenue goal, a new hire who had a family.

What was yours? Drop it in the comments. We’re genuinely curious what the actual tipping point looks like.

(And if you're still in the 'I'll get to it' phase -- also totally valid. Happy to answer questions if you've got them.)

Here's a story we hear way too often.

A Houston business owner spends three weeks finding the right candidate. Good interviews. Strong fit. Makes the offer.

The candidate accepts. Then disappears.

Turns out they went with a company that offered health insurance.

We've talked to that candidate's future employer. He didn't think he could afford benefits either -- until he saw what it actually cost.

It wasn't the benefits package that lost you that candidate. It was not knowing the real number.

But here's what we've found after years of doing this:

We get it. It's not exactly the highlight of your week.

But here's what We've found after years of doing this:

Every business owner wants to know the same four things.
Am I covered if something bad happens?
Are my employees taken care of?
Am I overpaying?
Am I compliant?

Our job is to make sure you can answer yes to all four -- and then get out of the way so you can focus on running your business.

That's it. That's the whole thing.

If you're a Houston business owner and you've been putting this off, let's just get those four questions answered. Takes 30 minutes.
