Access to healthcare in Appalachia is a growing crisis that demands immediate attention. While the national average for primary care physicians is 75.6 per 100,000 people, in Appalachia, that number drops to just 66.8—12% fewer doctors available to meet the needs of the population. This disparity widens in the most underserved areas. For example, Central Appalachia has only 50.9 primary care physicians per 100,000 people—one-third fewer than the national average. Southern Appalachia fares slightly better but is still 21% below the national standard.
The problem doesn’t stop with primary care. Appalachia has 35% fewer mental health providers, 28% fewer specialty physicians, and 26% fewer dentists compared to the rest of the country. For families in rural communities, this often means traveling hours to the nearest doctor, counselor, or dentist—if they can afford the time and cost of transportation. Imagine a single mother in rural Kentucky needing mental health services for her child but being told the closest provider is over 60 miles away with a six-month waiting list.
The consequences of this shortage are felt daily. Preventable conditions worsen without timely care. Routine dental issues turn into emergencies. And mental health needs go untreated, often escalating into crises. People in Appalachia are just as deserving of accessible, quality healthcare as anyone else in America. Yet for many, the barriers to care are nearly insurmountable.
This is not just a regional issue; it is a moral imperative for our entire nation. Addressing these disparities means investing in more healthcare professionals for underserved areas, expanding telehealth services, and ensuring affordable access to care for all. When we neglect the health of any part of our country, we all suffer.
Let us remember that fairness and human dignity require us to take action. By ensuring Appalachia’s families have access to healthcare, we not only uphold our shared values but strengthen the fabric of our nation as a whole.
