I wanted to share a brief summary of recent events in the banking industry.

Silicon Valley Bank, which caters to tech start-ups, venture capital, and high net-worth individuals, recently experienced liquidity issues and was unable to cover all customer deposits. In response, they announced a stock offering to quickly obtain cash and attempted to find a buyer for the bank. However, these efforts were unsuccessful, and the FDIC took control of the bank on Friday.

Over the weekend, the FDIC, the Fed, Treasury, and Congress met to come up with a solution for the lingering banking crisis. The Fed announced the Bank Term Funding Program (BTFP), which provides additional funding to banks to cover all customer deposits, backed by the US Treasury. Goldman Sachs also stated that they do not forecast a Fed rate increase in March due to stress on the banking system.

This means that the previously anticipated 50bps rate hike on March 22 may no longer occur, or there may only be a 25bps hike followed by no further increases. The CPI report coming out on March 14 is crucial as it will determine whether inflation has pulled back, which could result in the Fed rate hikes pausing. This may provide relief on mortgage rates that we have all been waiting for.

However, we must remain vigilant as there is still a major banking crisis looming, and we need to regain confidence that our money will be safe and obtainable whenever we need it. The recent announcement of additional funding available to banks should help alleviate some of the panic surrounding bank runs.
