GREAT TIPS FROM ATMOS ENERGY:
Winter Weather Safety and Energy Conservation Tips

Colder than normal weather is expected for the next several days in your area. Atmos Energy is closely monitoring the weather and staging employees across the system. Atmos Energy reminds you to stay alert to changing weather conditions and follow these tips to conserve energy, keep warm, and stay safe.
• Never use an oven or a gas stovetop to heat your home.
• Protect natural gas meters. Natural gas meters are weather-proof; however, so that the meter keeps working smoothly, remove snow and ice from natural gas meters with a broom or brush. Never kick or chip snow and ice away with a hard object.
• Safely remove snow from vents for dryers and other natural gas equipment. Blocked vents for dryers and other gas appliances can lead to a dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide gas.
• Minimize the risk of frozen pipes. Leave faucets running at a trickle, leave cabinet doors open, and close all doors and windows to keep heat inside.
• If you think you smell gas, act fast! Leave the area immediately and from a safe distance call 911 and the Atmos Energy emergency number at 866.322.8667.

Take these steps to reduce energy usage in your home:
• Lower your thermostat to 68 degrees during the day and 58 degrees when you are away from home.
• Lower your water heater temperature to 120 degrees or set your temperature dial to normal or medium. Water heating accounts for as much as 25 percent of the energy consumed in your home.
• Unplug electronic devices and turn off lights that are not in use.
• Reduce your shower time and take baths only when necessary. Showering and bathing can account for 40 percent of your home's hot water use.
• Operate your clothes washer, dryer, and dishwasher only when fully loaded.
• Keep your fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning. Leaving the damper open is like keeping a window wide open – warm air goes right up the chimney!
• If you have a pool, do not use the pool heater. Instead, run your pool pump during the coldest part of the day to circulate the water and prevent freezing.

For additional ways to manage your natural gas bill during the winter:
• Sign up for Budget Billing so your winter gas bills are more predictable.
• Find out about financial assistance if you are struggling to pay a past due balance.

If you think you smell gas, act fast! Leave the area immediately and from a safe distance call 911 and the Atmos Energy emergency number at 866.322.8667.

SCAM ALERT: AG Paxton Warns Texans About Text Message Scam

AUSTIN – Attorney General Ken Paxton today warned Texans about scammers sending text messages that include a false package delivery notice and a fraudulent link. The text messages in question usually claim that a package is pending delivery and requests the recipient to “claim ownership” by providing their credit card and personal information.

Any Texan who receives a suspicious text message should take the following steps:
• Do not click on any links.
• Do not respond to the message, share the message, or give out any personal, financial or identifying information.
• Delete the message and block the number that sent the message.
• Report the phone number and message contents to the Office of the Attorney General or the Federal Trade Commission.

Shipping companies such as DHL, UPS, FedEx and Amazon will not contact consumers about issues with a package via text message. Unsolicited text messages, particularly those containing unfamiliar links or purporting to come from a company you have not contacted first, should always be treated with caution.

Report suspected fraud to the attorney general’s Consumer Protection Division by calling toll-free 1-800-621-0508 or by filing an online complaint at https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/consumer-protection/file-consumer-complaint.

If you spot price gouging or experience unfair or unlawful business practices during Hurricane Laura, please file a complaint online or call our Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-621-0508.

SCAM ALERT: Beware of Entities Posing as State Agencies to Send Purchase Orders

AUSTIN – Attorney General Ken Paxton issued a consumer alert warning Texans and Texas companies to exercise caution with any purchase order purporting to come from a state agency when they have not established prior contact with that agency. Recently, scammers and entities posing as state agencies have sent out purchase orders for goods. The company receiving the fraudulent purchase order then processes the order, ships the goods and never receives payment from the scammers.

“All Texans should be aware of unsolicited purchase orders and requests from fraudsters impersonating leaders in their government. This is a scam that deceitful individuals are using to enrich themselves at the expense of hardworking citizens,” said Attorney General Paxton. “My office has a long history of pursuing those who attempt to defraud Texans and we stand ready to assist anyone harmed by these schemes.”

Texas state agencies have detailed procurement procedures for purchase orders and contracts. All unsolicited purchase orders supposedly sent from state agencies should be independently verified through direct contact with the agency.

Ken Paxton is the 51st Attorney General of Texas. He was elected on November 4, 2014, and sworn into office on January 5, 2015.
