SWBC Mortgage Honors Black History Month–Trailblazers: “Life is not a spectator sport. If you’re going to spend your whole life in the grandstand just watching what goes on, in my opinion, you’re wasting your life,” said Jackie Robinson. Perhaps no other athlete had a more profound impact on sports than the all-star second basemen who broke the major league color bar. Baseball has permanently retired number 42 for all players. And, on April 15 every season, all team members—even the umpires—wear number 42, to commemorate Opening Day 1947, Robinson’s first game in the majors.

Jackie Robinson's pioneering legacy still resonates throughout the game of baseball today.

Twenty-six times I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot...and missed. I've failed over, and repeatedly in my life. And that is why I succeed,” says Hall of Famer Michael Jordan. Considered perhaps the greatest player in NBA history, Jordan still has numerous endorsement contracts 17 years after hanging up his eponymous hightops. And as one of the nation’s wealthiest billionaires, his generous philanthropy has been as impressive as his on-court successes.
