Congratulations to Professor Jim Thomson and the NOPP Hurricane Coastal Impacts team on receiving the 2025 Excellence in Partnering Award from the National Oceanographic Partnership Program last year! The project brings together researchers from academia, government and industry to better predict how hurricanes damage coastlines, from beach erosion to barrier island breaching.

U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System

The U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS), in conjunction with , are accepting applications for a new $7.5 million 2026 to accelerate the transition of novel from development to operational implementation and commercialization. The Transition (OTT) program targets prototype-stage technologies with a known need, but not yet ready for operational deployment.

Program priorities include: (especially low-cost/accessible physical, biological, or chemical); cloud/ for analysis and quality assurance/quality control; novel ; sensors/platforms; samplers; sensors; high frequency (HFR) use/metrics/development; and novel /analytics for improved service.

The projects P*s gathered for a hybrid meeting on May 7th and 8th, 2026, in College Park, MD, and virtually to foster collaboration, share research findings, and discuss future priorities and gaps in . Coordinated by the NOAA Ocean Acidification Program (OAP), the meeting featured three sessions focused on building foundational understanding, integration and engagement, and lessons from the field. These 17 projects, involving partners from 47 institutions, are supported by a landmark $24.3M investment awarded in 2023 following the 2022 NOFO process, aimed at advancing mCDR approaches, understanding risks and co-benefits, and establishing regulatory frameworks for climate mitigation solutions.
