The VA had a program that was saving veteran families from losing their homes.
They shut it down anyway.
Since May 2025 — more than 10,000 veterans have lost their homes to foreclosure. That is the highest pace of VA loan foreclosures in an entire decade.
Another 90,000 veterans are behind on their mortgages or currently in the foreclosure process right now.
Here's what makes this so painful — the mortgage industry warned Congress this would happen. In March 2025, a representative from the Mortgage Bankers Association stood before the House Veterans Affairs Committee and said directly: "Foreclosure. Period. That's really where it's gonna come to."
Two months later, they shut the program down anyway.
Veterans like Leann Ledford's husband — a Marine with a brain injury and PTSD from Afghanistan — had enough income to make payments under the program. They just weren't able to enroll before it was pulled. Now their family is facing eviction.
A replacement program exists on paper. It was signed into law in July 2025. As of today, April 2026, it is still not fully operational.
These are people who served this country. Who sacrificed their bodies, their mental health, their families. The VA home loan is supposed to be one of the most meaningful benefits they earn. This is not what that promise looks like.
