How much cash should you actually keep? Most people pick a round number they heard once: three months of expenses, six months, done.

The real number depends on your life. Three things move it more than any rule of thumb: how stable your income is (two salaries, one salary, freelance, commission), what big bills you can already see coming (the roof, the car, daycare), and how fast you could get cash if things went sideways.

A rule of thumb is a starting point, not an answer. Run your own number: https://oaksfs.com/guides/emergency-fund/

The Roth vs. traditional question is one of the most common ones we hear, and it's usually been answered once, years ago, on an enrollment form, then never revisited.
That's the real problem. The choice isn't permanent, but people treat it like it is. Tax brackets change, the law changes, and the right answer at 32 is often the wrong answer at 45.
The framework: compare today's bracket to a reasonable guess at retirement, weigh whether RMDs will be a tax problem later, and be honest about whether today's deduction is load-bearing for the budget. Three inputs, and most people have never run even one of them.

There's a number I like to talk about with families in their 30s and 40s, and it isn't your account balance. It's your "investable date" — the day your savings cross $100,000 in investable assets.

Why does the date matter? Because below that line, you're building the habit. Above it, compounding starts doing more of the heavy lifting. And unlike your balance, the date has levers you can actually pull.

We built a quick, free tool that estimates yours in about 60 seconds — no email needed. What would you do with the extra room if your date moved up a few years?

We just rebuilt oaksfs.com from the ground up. Here's a look inside.

Most financial sites lead with the pitch. We led with the questions people actually ask us: Am I on track? What happens to my RMDs? Do I actually need this life insurance policy, or is it noise?

So the new site is built around three things:

A growing library of free, plain-language guides, real answers, no login required

Interactive tools you can run your own numbers through before you ever talk to us

Two advisors, one philosophy — so your plan doesn't depend on catching the "right" person on the phone

No pressure, no pitch on page one. Just the same things we'd tell you in a meeting, written down.

Take a look, and tell us what you'd want a guide on next. 👇

Quick question: when's the last time anyone actually checked whether you're overpaying in taxes, rather than just filing and hoping?

We built the Wealth Builder Tax Audit for exactly that — twelve questions, five minutes, one clear picture of where you might be leaking money without realizing it. No meeting required, no obligation.

Here's a number almost nobody has calculated for themselves: the amount that, once invested, could support your life without a paycheck.

We call it your freedom number. "Am I saving enough?" is the question we hear more than any other, and it's actually unanswerable until you know this one figure.

Comment "number" and we'll send you the guide to work it out yourself.

Is your advisor legally required to put your interests first?

Most aren't. Many operate under a "suitability" standard, not a fiduciary one — and the difference isn't just legal fine print. It shapes which products get recommended to you and why.

Takes two minutes to check which standard your advisor actually operates under. Link in bio for the full breakdown. 🌳
