🏗️ Industry Insight Friday: Contractors May Need Capital Before They Get Paid

Contractors and service-based businesses often have to spend money long before a customer’s payment arrives.

Before completing a project, they may need to cover:

🔹 Materials and supplies
🔹 Employee or subcontractor payroll
🔹 Equipment and vehicle expenses
🔹 Permits, insurance, and other job costs
🔹 Everyday business expenses

Even after the work is finished, payment may not arrive for 30, 60, or even 90 days. That gap can create cash-flow pressure—especially when another opportunity comes along before the previous invoice has been paid.

Access to working capital may help a qualified business cover upfront costs, keep projects moving, and take on new work while waiting for outstanding invoices.

Planning ahead can make it easier to say “yes” to the next opportunity without putting unnecessary strain on the business.

💳 Payment Choices Are Growing—but Surcharges Can Cost Sales

Today’s customers expect more ways to pay. According to J.D. Power’s 2026 Merchant Services Satisfaction Study:

📱 92% of surveyed merchants accept digital wallets
🛍️ 58% of small businesses accept buy-now-pay-later services
💳 35% of small businesses add a surcharge for credit-card payments

However, 32% of merchants reported that customers sometimes or frequently cancel a purchase after seeing a surcharge.

Dual pricing or surcharging may help a business manage processing expenses, but implementation matters. Before making a change, business owners should consider:

✅ Proper customer disclosure
✅ Applicable laws and card-network rules
✅ Staff training
✅ Point-of-sale setup
✅ The effect on customer experience and completed sales

“No-fee processing” does not necessarily mean every cost disappears. The expense may be structured differently or passed to the customer.

The right payment-processing setup should balance cost, compliance, convenience and customer satisfaction.

Today, the world says goodbye to a true American treasure, Dolly Parton. 💔

Dolly was so much more than a country music legend. She was a woman of faith, compassion, humor, strength, and extraordinary generosity. Her songs gave a voice to everyday people, her kindness brought hope to countless families, and her Imagination Library opened the world of reading to millions of children.

She never forgot where she came from, and she used her blessings to lift others. Her beautiful spirit, unmistakable voice, and timeless music will live on for generations.

Rest peacefully, Dolly. Thank you for sharing your God-given gifts and making this world a brighter, kinder place. You will always be loved, deeply missed, and forever remembered. 🙏🏼🕊️

“I will always love you.” ❤️

🚨 California Small-Business Disaster Assistance Update

The SBA has opened Economic Injury Disaster Loan assistance for eligible California businesses and private nonprofits experiencing financial losses directly connected to the 2026 Los Palos Incident.

Businesses may qualify even if they did not suffer physical property damage. Approved funds may be used for essential operating expenses such as:

✅ Payroll
✅ Fixed debts
✅ Accounts payable
✅ Other bills that cannot be paid because of the disaster

Eligible businesses may apply for up to $2 million, with interest rates as low as 4%. Loan amounts, rates and terms are determined by the SBA based on each applicant’s financial condition.

The Economic Injury Disaster Loan application deadline is May 14, 2027.

If your business was directly affected, review the government program before choosing ordinary working capital. The best funding option is the one that properly fits your circumstances—not simply the one that arrives fastest.

💡 Myth vs. Fact Tuesday

❌ Myth: Business owners should wait until they desperately need money before exploring funding.

✅ Fact: The best time to understand your funding options is often before the need becomes urgent.

Waiting until cash flow is tight can create unnecessary pressure and may limit the choices available. Planning ahead gives business owners time to:

✔️ Compare potential options
✔️ Review costs and repayment terms
✔️ Prepare financial documents
✔️ Make a thoughtful decision
✔️ Use funding strategically—not emotionally

Exploring your options does not mean you are required to accept funding. It simply helps you understand what may be available if an opportunity or unexpected expense comes along.

Preparation gives you choices. Desperation can take them away.

📢 Important Update for Growing Small Businesses

The U.S. Small Business Administration has proposed changes to the way it defines and classifies small businesses.

The proposal would simplify industry classifications and raise certain size limits. According to the SBA, more than 110,000 additional employer businesses could potentially qualify as small businesses.

If finalized, this could allow some growing companies to remain eligible—or become newly eligible—for:

✅ SBA lending programs
✅ Federal contracting opportunities
✅ Business counseling and support programs
✅ Other government resources

This is still a proposal and is not currently in effect. Eligibility would continue to depend on a business’s industry, NAICS classification, revenue, employee count and the requirements of the specific program.

Growing businesses should never assume they are too large to qualify. Check the current requirements and stay informed as this proposal develops.
